I'm so sorry for your loss. It's terrifying when these things come out of nowhere, too.
Everybody reacts to grief in different ways at different times, so if you're not a crying wreck, it doesn't mean you're a bad niece or a bad person. Often, if someone (or many people) are falling apart, someone else manages to act relatively "normal" at the same time -- I think it's a defense mechanism groups of humans developed a long time ago, to have someone in the group stay calm even when something terrible occurs. It sounds like you might be that person, and that's absolutely fine.
(One thing I want to suggest: do you know how to do a LJ-cut? There could be someone on your friends list who would be really upset or even triggered by reading about this, so you might want to put all of this under a cut with "talk of a recent death" outside the cut so people can skip past if it would be too painful for them to read.)
Anyway, take care. I'm wishing the best for you and your family. *hugs*
I don't remember the code for lj-cut, but if you're in the richtext editor, there's a button for it. Select the part you want to have inside the cut (not visible unless you click), and then click the button that looks like lines of text with a squiggle below (if that makes any sense).
