do not want + mandatory poll of death (THIS MEANS YOU)

Trying to get in with Mum's mates, and it comes with certain inconveniences. There's a bit of River City in with it which I could certainly do without: I received a text from Mum's old love interest saying that she was "too much" for him, but yeah, he'd love to date me. (Cue Ten: What?) I think I do very well maintaining my distance from single men ( Read more... )

I am completely Dr Who clueless, so I can't help. If this isn't a public post, would you be willing to make it one so that my friends who are Whovians can give you their input? I'll provide 'em a link to help you!

It's mostly an aesthetic thing, so you don't really need to know anything about Who to participate (although I highly recommend getting into the series!). For your friends, my entries and polls are usually public. Just link.them to http://gibbous,livejournal.com/200178.html Thanks!

Putting on my readability hat - please stick to a sans serif font, for the sake of readability. Many people have trouble reading a serif font like Times New Roman.

I think it's very cool that you're going to re-design the site!

I've decided on Helvetica, secondary font Arial. Thank you for your input!

(And it's been really fun. Mostly because it gives me a professional excuse to make pretty DW backgrounds. xD)

I didn't know that was the title of the forum; that's funny, I had a thought a few days ago about that concept.

I think instead of a sidebar, maybe have either a drop-down list, or a consecutive series of photo-links (like, little square 75x75 ones) that have an opaque name of where it goes, with maybe a scroll over effect, like B+W, or maybe changing into a copy of the same photo with the word highlighted, or something to that effect.

although that's a lot mor work than a drop list....

or if you want to make it really neat, make a panoramic photo of something spacey (iunno a galaxy or something)) that spreads across the top of the page, with a little trail-map ala Family Circus, and a wee TARDIS could make it's way across it and land on wee planets or whatnot in the image that represent various places within the website. I think one of those places oughta be a cheeseburger. a giant, galactic cheeseburger.

...

*insane laughter* OKAY!

Personally, I like the way sidebars look - they give breadth to forums without taking up too much extra space. Drop down menus aren't immediately visible upon loading, and flash menus take too long to load (although I'm not sure at this point which is worse, Flash or Javascript ... omg Javascript is angering me like Angry Sanka).

Giant, galactic cheeseburger ........ there needs be fic.

Sidebar? We have a sidebar? (my preference is on the left though)

As long as the text is dark font on light background I'm happy. I wish I had a screencap of the original forum layout because it used to be a TARDIS imposed on a starry background. Except the starry background was weirdly fixed so that it "moved" by not moving when you scrolled down and made me very dizzy. It's hard to explain...

One suggestion, though I'm not sure how practical it is with what you're planning, is to make sure any important text (such as the text designating which sub-board is which) is accessible via screen readers. So, actual high-lightable text rather than image files.

We have a sidebar now. *evil cackle*

And I usually don't overdo it with the images anyway; it makes things take longer to load.

The way I have it now, it's dark green text on a white background. The bg image is a bright/dark green combo, with a black welcome bar/border. Basically, all the dark green bars gradient into black, if that makes any sense. I'll send you a barebones preview once I've squashed some bugs. :D
