The Adventure Monkeys in: "Escape from Baghdad"

It is now official: Royal Jordanian can blow me.  We spent all day yesterday trying to board the Baghdad-Amman flight, only to be repeatedly delayed until all flights that day were cancelled.  We were promised a flight this morning, and so at 6:30 A.M. we dragged our tired selves down to the airport to try again.  And guess what?  Not only is the ( Read more... )

I found your journal while browsing through LJ. Very, very cool. I used to run an Internet company in Nigeria, and many of your comments sound familiar (though I was never in anywhere near the danger you are). Doing technology work in developing countries is frustratingly cool and awesome work. Mind if I friend you?
Good luck on your drive to Turkey.

Excellent icon, by the way. Can you give me some background on it?

I have friends who did similiar things in Kenya, and one friend who just moved to Nigeria to work for a satellite internet company.

I cannot tell you how much I agree with your statement on working in developing countries. Some days, I tear my hair out. Some days, I feel incredibly accomplished.

Of course, friend me. I'll do the same.

The icon comes from a Flash animation that was being passed around online a few months ago. It's here: Weebl's Stuff: Kenya

The Nigerian Internet market is growing quickly. It's amazing- when I first went there in 1999 there weren't many ISPs or Internet cafes there- now you probably can't find a street anywhere in Lagos that doesn't have two or more Internet cafes. I'm sure the same thing will happen in Iraq. Because the telephone system is so horrible and local wireless Internet providers are so untrustworthy, satellite services are the way to go- your friend is definately in the right business. Do you know what company he went to work for? I might know them.

When my wife and I got back from Nigeria, we were glad to be back (despite the reverse-culture-shock). Now that I've been back for a while I miss it a lot.
