The Basics

What does your username mean:There is a tradition in theatre that, every night when the theatre is closed for the day, a light is left shining on the stage, at the apron, at the very point where stage threatens to become audience. The stories say this "Ghost Light" is set out so the theatre will never be dark, meaning here both non-producing and absent of light. Other stories say the ghost light is put out, here meaning "placed", not "extinguished" (I'm reading Lemony Snicket, sorry) so all of the theatre's ghosts may gather around it and perform their favorite monologues, scenes and soliloquies for each other. In reality, the ghost light is put out so no idiots or other innocent souls walk off the edge of the stage in the dark. The first task on the list when the theatre opens is to put the ghost light away, and the last task is to put it out on stage for the ghosts. That is my metaphor for stage managing: first in and last out.

Happy birthday! We have loads in common. I'm a former stage manager, used to work in a box office, love watching cooking competitions, and have been a NSO for roller derby. Mind if I add you?

The story behind your username is really lovely! (and the concept of "ghost light" is not one I've heard of before, so I also learned something new!)

We have a few fannish interests in common (Firefly, The Princess Bride, the Magicians books, and do you mean the Lukyanenko Night Watch, or a different series?) and a lot of mutual friends, plus you sound really cool. Friends?

And also, happy birthday!

Thank you so much!

I do mean Lukyanenko's series. I love both the books and movies.

Very cool! I like the books (especially for Arina and Semyon) and enjoyed the first movie, despite the major plot differences (haven't seen Day Watch, though).

I saw Daywatch before I read the books. I was hoping reading them would shed more light on what was going on...

I used to be a stage manager, and I have a ghost light tattoo. We also seem to have a bunch of favorites in common.

Friends?
