This is really interesting to me. I've always loved the Sherlock Holmes stories, before any adaptation, and I have really enjoyed BBC's Sherlock because I think Moffat has a great directorial eye. I've wanted to watch Elementary, but I haven't yet - I guess I've just been worried that I wouldn't like it.
Sherlock and Elementary are really different formats, so that might also affect how much you might like them! Elementary has episodic mysteries (and of course a lot more episodes) and they really aren't the focus for me at all (sometimes I don't even remember what happened in them after an episode!). But I really enjoy that show's take on Holmes and Watson. Especially because that Homes is way less of a jackass than the one on Sherlock, which makes him more interesting and compelling to me.
Also It might be different to someone coming from a love of the classic SH stories instead? But since Sherlock was my first real interest in them, I don't mind any of the changing of the backgrounds of the characters or anything like that.
As for Moffat, I don't know if you watch Doctor Who, but I don't like anything he's done since he took over on that show, and overall I am just not a fan of his plotting or the way he writes. But of course that's just my taste so Elementary might just be something that doesn't work for you for whatever reason!
interesting. i too do not enjoy moffat.. i may have to check out elementary:) sorry that you feel that way though cause I know that you were really into sherlock.
Hah yeah I was really into Sherlock, which is slightly embarassing now a bit ;)
Also you might be slightly bored by Elementary because so much of it is just procedural mysteries, but there is lots of good stuff with the characters mixed in!
It's not embarrassing! It's a quality show--cinematically gorgeous, technically slick. It's easy to get sucked in on that alone. It's only with deeper exposure that the fundamental flaws become un-ignorable, I think.
True, it is pretty and shiny. And part of me is still almost weirdly attached to it because of how much I invested into that shi, but still I really just want to be away from it. Especially because that last episode of Elementary was so genuinely awesome and made me happy instead of angsty and annoyed like most of Sherlock has.
I still haven't even finished watching Sherlock. I love the cinematography/style, but I find it emotionally very cold, so I'm just not really all that motivated to queue up the next episode. Plus, I just really don't like episodes that long. It's such a commitment to sit down and watch!
I definitely know what you mean about the emotional coldness. It's easy to read into some stuff, but there really isn't that much actual substance in the show on its own.
Also I don't mind the longer episodes but I definitely can see how they would annoy some people. *cough*watchelementary*cough*
