Coming, Dad!

[Hilda bounces out the door as always, looking over the spread excitedly. She herself made some cupcakes--of course dad would be doing the grilling, but she was a girl after all, and if she didn't make something for the Fourth of July that would just be weird!

Samurott is following her out, making noises that are obviously incredibly worried. As she puts the cupcakes on the table, Hilda glances over at him and frowns, suddenly looking nervous and worried herself.]

I feel like something's... Not right...

[He knew you were his favorite daughter Hilda. Her verbal echoing of his own thoughts does unsettle him.]

It's fine, right? It's a holiday so we're off our routine. . .

Those look really good.

Maybe that's it.

Oh, thank you! For a while I was afraid we were out of food coloring, what kind of Fourth of July would it be if we didn't have red, white, and blue cupcakes, but I--

[...Really, what's wrong with today? She frowns again, and Samurott nudges her lightly.]

...Not now, Sam...

[Yup. Sam the dog. Sorry Samurott.]

[He's looking at her expectantly, waiting for her to finish the sentence . . . and when she doesn't, it's that much more unnerving. He stabs a hamburger patty a little too hard with the grilling fork, turning it over.]

. . . what's wrong with Sam?

[Why did she call him that.]

I'm surprised you're not at home.

It's the perfect day for that.

My daughter made some treats; you should take one with you.

[Wince. Why does this feel so wrong.]

Thijs! Good afternoon! [Wow it's that annoying neighbour hanging over your fence and smiling as if you're best friends and he's not a jackass it's almost as if he doesn't know the truth] If you're not careful, those will burn, you know!

Happy 4th, Francis.

[He'll throw the burned ones into your yard.]

I know how to grill.

[He'll just think it's Arthur getting drunk and trashing his property again...]

Ah, are you sure? It doesn't really look that way from here.

[Irrational anger . . . no, that was an absurd thought, of course he wouldn't throw burned food into his neighbor's yard. They were friends. He forces a slight grin onto his face.]

Then maybe you should come try one and figure it out.

[He was going to be sick.]

Why are you calling me that, Kiku?

[Still direct. But after they'd moved here, sometimes he got called that in school by the kids who would tease him for his accent, and his parents who spoke Dutch to him.

. . . that's what happened, right.]

[Not that she's going to complain about good morning kisses but what the hell. As if her head playing tricks on her wasn't enough, he was getting all weird? No, not okay. She'd rather have sanity than good morning kisses.

So she hunts him down in the kitchen once she's dressed.]

Nederland! What are you-- Oh. I overslept today, didn't I? [And didn't make breakfast. What an awful wife.]

Y-- Sorry. [She looks pale and worried, which isn't anything new for Canada, but she's also gripping the back of a kitchen chair like it's a life line.]

I think I was having odd dreams again. I could have sworn...
