I can't rec these AU's more. Building Blocks and Soaring especially. They are in character, with an understandable softening of Brian. You'll understand when you read them.

You should try Gaedhal's "Medium Security" or her "The Angel Stream" (the angel stream is similar to canon, medium security is so completely AU that it takes place in a prison in 1979.)

You could find both, along with her best story (and the best story ever) Queer Theories (which takes off from canon but goes AU around early - mid season 2) at her website www.fortruthis.com/gaedhal

Part of me hates to call QT au, to me it's like hyper canon. how ever I am a fool when it comes to that story :)

It is my favorite story ever. It is my favorite Brian Kinney and my favorite Justin Taylor and mphf.

I'm writing a story at the moment where Brian and Justin don't meet until what would be Season Three, during the Stockwell campaign. It's a WIP but I'm up to 43 chapters and closing in on the end now.
