Political Idiom?

Oct 27, 2008 16:15

I was just looking something up in the german english dictionary dict.cc
and I found something rather amusing:

The idiom "Down but not out" was translated in German as "We haven't lost Poland yet".

I really couldn't stop laughing.

german, funny

Ouch.

Leo gives the same translation, btw.

Horrible enough that I know this phrase (even though I'm quite sure I've never used and seldom read it), but I never thought about its background before! Na ja, noch ist Polen nicht verloren *fg*

I think it is one of those sayings that are fading away, which is not always a bad thing. E.g. I still hear people saying "bis zur Vergasung" *shudders* which is a bit tasteless, considering the new connotation it got because the Shoah.
