И у ( Read more... )

No, I haven't and after reading the comments I don't think I will.
This comment agrees with everything I know. While the picture I am getting from the positive comments only further discredits the book in my eyes.

OK, that's fair enough. I don't agree with everything in that comment but I actually agree with his main point that the authors seem to advance their thesis by only citing supporting evidence and rejecting all evidence to the contrary.
However, to me the book was interesting precisely because of that supporting evidence, which otherwise is relatively hard to come by, especially collected in one place and well-organized.

You didn't answer my question about Elaine Pagels...

Well, you may like this book by Lena Einhorn. It explores several non-mainstream theories and they are an interesting read, and here also some of the evidence is hard to come by otherwise.
Some of those theories are quite out there but none of them to the degree of the "pagan origin" claim. Besides, it gives a pretty good idea of the basis of knowledge about historical Jesus.

I haven't read any of her books. Her idea of Gnostic Paul seems to be clearly outside the mainstream, but again, can't be compared with the paganism claim.
