Things that don't appeal to me in fic.

Sep 04, 2004 10:31

This is a random, incomplete list of writing things that disagree with me in fanfiction. While I am writing strictly from the BeatlesSlash point of view, these same things more or less apply (for me) across the board, in any fandom or official publication. I am directing this at no one ( Read more... )

... I hate when people use nicknames all of the time, whether it's in dialog or not. For example, calling Paul "Macca" for the bulk of the story. It's kind of stupid. :/

Yes, or when they devise new nicknames and constantly use them throughout the story, or immeditately after first having sex/confessing their love. Very annoying.

he same goes for the Beatles presumed wives; if they're married/dating at the time your story takes place (research!)

I hate when people demonstrate they don't know even the most basic facts of the Beatles' lives...argh.

Good rant.

Most of the time it's just lack of wanting to actually deal with the wives; people are lazy.

Eek. I'm not guilty of these things, am I?

Knowing me, I probably am O.O

I don't think I've caught you doing any of them. :) I like even if you have.

One of the few things that tends to keep me from enjoying your stories better (as you're one of the few J/P shippers I will actually read) is that many times your stories lack identification on who the story is about. Sometimes there are moments or phrases where I understand who the parties in point are but quite often, I have no idea. Your recent fabbles, for instance -- Brian was easy enough to identify 'queer jew' and all but George was much harder. I also have no idea who George was supposed to be with in that fabble; who had thick carpenter hands?

Apparently it works for other pairings though. For instance, if you specific, "This is a J/P piece from Paul's POV" then it's obvious. Sometimes, it's not so clear though, which, in my case, distracts from the story.

I don't mean to intimidate people with this list (and I'm sure you don't mean to with yours) but at the same time, if people are made aware of flaws, they can improve their writing. I'm always finding things I do that I ought not (like using epithets). I'm never done

Bravo for posting this; I'll probably use this as a checklist if I am ever unsure.

I hope I shan't seem a stalker, but you're rather interesting. Would you mind terribly if I added you to my f-lists on both weeping_sitar and irish_spectre?

Be sure to check out a similar list by mod_alcyone recently posted. It's very good.

And, feel free to add me to your lists, I'm flattered. :) And it's not stalkerish at all.
