Summary: Helen and Kate run into each other in the middle of the night.
Kate was barefoot because she didn't trust herself to be quiet even in slippers. Besides, with Hank and the Big Guy around, there was a chance they would hear her even on tiptoes. So it was better to be safe than sorry. She slipped out of her room, biting her bottom lip as she carefully, quietly shut the door and started down the hallway. She wouldn't stay up all morning, but she had taken a nap the previous day to prepare herself for this disturbance. She was still in her pajamas, her robe untied and swinging around her legs like a cape as she went downstairs. She would just turn on the TV for a half hour or so, and then if she heard anyone coming, she could just claim she was channel surfing.
She was almost to the door of the viewing room when Helen came around the corner. Her appearance was so sudden and so unexpected, that Kate yelped in surprise. Helen's head shot up, her eyes wide, and her free hand went behind her back. Thankfully she stopped herself before she drew a weapon. "Kate? What in the world are you doing up at this hour?"
Kate stammered. "I... was... going to get a... midnight snack." She looked at the bowl of chocolate candy in Helen's hand. "If you left me anything, that is."
"Oh, there's plenty." Helen glanced toward the door to the viewing room. "You weren't planning on watching television, were you?"
"I... no."
"Good. There's something I've been eager to see." She quirked her lips to the side and looked down at her snack. "Ah. Would you like--"
"Sure." Kate took one of the pieces of chocolate. She had to step forward to do it and, when she glanced into the viewing room, she saw that the TV was tuned to CNN. She narrowed her eyes. "Uh, what were you going to watch?"
"Oh, nothing that would interest you, I'm sure."
Kate threw caution to the wind. "It wasn't the royal wedding? Was it?"
Helen made a face. "Well, I am a friend of the family. Lillibet wanted to invite me to the ceremony, but I couldn't justify the time away from the Sanctuary. I didn't mention anything to anyone because... well..."
"It's kind of humiliating," Kate admitted. "But I really do want to watch."
"You do?" Helen glanced toward the television. "I wouldn't mind if you watched with me."
Kate had wanted to shamefully watch, get her fill of the royals and then scurry away without anyone being the wiser. She was not the kind of girl to go gaga over something like this. She didn't like going to weddings of people she knew. But something about royalty... "Not a word of this to--"
"--Will or Henry? God no."
"Just a guilty pleasure."
They went into the room and settled on the couch. Helen put the chocolate between them and took a piece, watching the pre-coverage of the ceremony.
"You know, it's not fair that we get mocked for this. Guys are the exact same way with the Super Bowl. And they don't have to get up in the middle of the night to see it."
"Excellent point. And what's wrong with wanting to see a little good news in the world? It's a nice change of pace."
"Right." Kate chewed her candy thoughtfully. "You know, Will and Kate--"
"The thought occurred to me as well." Helen was smirking.
Kate rolled her eyes. "Thanks for not making jokes."
"Oh, I wouldn't dream of it, duchess."
Kate groaned. She glanced at Helen again and noted that she was wearing a silk robe over a forest green nightgown. She furrowed her brow as she remembered Helen reaching for a weapon.
"Hey. Are you really armed?"
"Yes."
"Where is it hidden?"
Helen smiled and pointed at the screen. "Oh, Cat Deeley. I love her."
Kate, recognizing the change of subject, slumped down and put her feet on the edge of the table as she turned her attention to the wedding coverage.
