It seemed silly to, when I have perfectly good ones already that just happen to be in the wrong state. If my parents can't easily find mine, or forget to bring them down when they come in a couple of weeks, I'll go ahead and buy new ones, and sell off the old along with my childhood bike or something.
Just make sure that you actually get a GOOD lock, if you'll be locking it up outside. I feel like the level of security to keep your bike safe in Boston versus where your parents live is very, very different.
Oh, yeah, I know; this is an old Kryptonite U-lock with cable that I got back when I brought my old bike to Boston in college. It's pretty much identical to the ones the bike shop was recommending to my housemate.
So the only question now is whether my parents can find the thing and its keys...
Thanks for the articles, though! If my old one's lost and I do have to buy a new lock, I'll definitely refer to those too.
Ahahaha yeah, you could not pay me enough to bike down Comm Ave without a helmet. You might have to pay me to bike down Comm Ave, period.
It totally is how they get you! THE FIENDS. To be fair, I was officially telling myself it was just for research, but I was open to the idea of buying one if I found a good enough one in my price range anyway. There's no chance I'll get up to Vermont again before June at the earliest, and while I'm willing to ask my parents to bring down my helmet and lock, asking them to bring the entire bike just so I can get it looked at here instead of at the perfectly good shop in their town seems a bit silly.
Oooooh Esplanade picnic. I am so completely up for that!
(Also, Ace Wheelworks is totally where I bought my new bike last summer after I started getting more seriously into it. Everybody really does go there.)

I'm surprised you didn't get a helmet and lock while you were there, though

This is a useful article on different bike locks. Also, look at this to see how to most securely lock up your bike.
I found this video useful in showing a lot of the different *ineffective* ways to lock up your bike to avoid.

I'm jealous. Also totally thinking about getting a bike myself. I might even ride it down Comm Ave without a helmet, just you wait!
