That's great. Biking is an excellent form of both transport and exercise.

I'm surprised you didn't get a helmet and lock while you were there, though

It seemed silly to, when I have perfectly good ones already that just happen to be in the wrong state. If my parents can't easily find mine, or forget to bring them down when they come in a couple of weeks, I'll go ahead and buy new ones, and sell off the old along with my childhood bike or something.

Just make sure that you actually get a GOOD lock, if you'll be locking it up outside. I feel like the level of security to keep your bike safe in Boston versus where your parents live is very, very different.

This is a useful article on different bike locks. Also, look at this to see how to most securely lock up your bike.

I found this video useful in showing a lot of the different *ineffective* ways to lock up your bike to avoid.

Oh, yeah, I know; this is an old Kryptonite U-lock with cable that I got back when I brought my old bike to Boston in college. It's pretty much identical to the ones the bike shop was recommending to my housemate.

So the only question now is whether my parents can find the thing and its keys...

Thanks for the articles, though! If my old one's lost and I do have to buy a new lock, I'll definitely refer to those too.

Okay, good. I just wanted to make sure that you weren't using some cheap, knockoff U-lock. You clearly know what you're doing.

I just got a Kryptonite -- I didn't get the top rated one, as I'm not actually locking my bike up in NYC -- but I got a good one and I think it'll be good for when I'm locking my bike up on campus. I'm currently storing the bike inside my apartment when I'm home.

[I also got a new bike this weekend -- to replace my last bike, which was stolen.]
