Yes, it's a meme

Meme ganked from all over my friendslist. I like it mostly for the chance to add commentary, and read other people's. I've added, uh, a lot, because I'm rambly ( Read more... )

Nobody makes funnel cake up north.

North of where? I live in Toronto and I've had funnel cake! Reasonably close to home, too!

In New England, at least, no one seems to make it, though it's certainly possible I've just missed the right stalls at fairs and such. I see fried dough all over the place, which is a close enough cousin to be pretty satisfying too, but not funnel cake.

Well, bah on New England, then. Come to Toronto! We have funnel cake pouring out our ears!

...not literally, that would be disgusting.

Not to mention very messy.

I've had funnel cake in NY and PA - fairly easily found, too. Fairs and carnivals and amusement parks tend to have them. And street fairs. I'm not sure where I'd go for one if I wanted it on the spur of the moment, though.

In New England it seems to mostly be fried dough at such places, rather than funnel cake. A close cousin, of course -- it's still fried and sweet and terrible for you and delicious -- but not quite as satisfying, to me. Then again, it's entirely possible I've just had bad luck in going to fairs that don't have any. (Or that I've walked right past the stall, I suppose.)

Well, that's the term my family always uses; I don't know what the actual regulations are. But I believe that when I've had it it's been cooked in a plastic bag rather than a sheep's stomach, and with more ground lamb than sheep's innards, and my impression was always that part of the reason for that was regulations about what meat you can and can't buy in a grocery store.

I haven't gone researching to see if this impression is correct, though.

I would imagine that the FDA approval is related to brain and spinal cord material - re. scrapie or CJD or whatever horrible disease we're trying to infect innocent Americans with.

Quite possibly -- though this impression does predate all the recent mad cow etc stuff by years. But a ban on brain and spinal cord material sounds pretty plausible.

I haven't had barszcz in years; I really should buy some. But they changed it to be sweeter? Bah! I hate sweet soup. Barszcz is one of the very few ways I like beets prepared, so I am leery of trying to make it and getting it wrong, but I should give it a go sometime.

That is a valuable warning about peeing red. I can see how that would be deeply disconcerting.

And oooh, that beer sounds tasty! I would be up for that. :D I don't tend to drink beer on my own, but I've developed a taste for it as a social drink. Especially good beer. (It's ridiculously obvious that I come from a family of beer snobs; I think Guinness and Sam Adams are the most mainstream beers I've ever tried.)

Yes, exactly, about the beers. It's not that I'm a snob for snobbery's sake, nor for the sake of paying more money. But I just like relatively complex ales and so forth, and Budweiser (for example) does not so much produce those.

Heh, I did this meme for the fun of it, but I think I crossed off 49 different items -- I've never eaten meat, so that killed a third of the list right there.

Ha! That would do it, yes. If I'd been crossing off everything that vegetarianism prevented me from eating, there would have been a whole lot more strikethroughs. And ditto if I hadn't been a meat-eater till I was in late high school.
