This was for a bridal shower. The inside is strawberry and vanilla zebra cake.
Outside was all buttercream with fondant accents. The roses took forever. They aren't my forte, but they came out alright!

i dont know the first thing about cake making, but i agree... the smooth-ness difference between the fondant and buttercream is insane. i definitely say you read up on what the first comment posted about with smoothing because it will probably make a world of difference. that said, i haaaaate icing cakes. i can't even imagine. haha

oh dude, looks wicked! question! How do you make fondant? Is it powder that you add water to, then roll out? or what?

Also... in looove with the little bow on the cake in the first picture. How'd you do that?

Jeeze, enough questions ;)

I dump a bag of marshmallows into a bowl, sprinkle a little water on them, microwave for one minute. Then I mix til they melt, add my color (gel), mix more, then slowly add one pound of powdered sugar.
(sifted)

A tiny bit of shortening helps it come together and not stick to everything. You end up kneading it on the counter, so the shortening helps there.

I don't know if you can do it with vegan marshmallows?

But yeah, It makes like a ball that you (painstakingly) roll out to a sheet, drape over the cake and then smooth out over the sides and cut off the excess.

For the bow, I took a strip of fondant and just folded it into itself and wrapped another strip around it lol

Okay I've seen you post on ihearttattos so I swear I'm not a creep!! I worked at pebble beach in their bakery. You really dont want to use a scraper for buttercream, if you have an offset spatula or just a spatula use that, however make sure you have a pitcher full of HOT water to dunk it in, wipe off then carefully go around your cake, it gives you a crisper cleaner look. Hope that helps!
