Saturdays

Saturdays are the days I dread and wait for all at the same time. I hate them because it's the day we open earlier than any other at work, but we also close half an hour early and I have Sunday's off... I just hate to drag my ass in there... but let's be honest, I hate doing that every day, now don't I ( Read more... )

Aww, I'm sorry babe. I think you should go to school if that's what you want to do. I know it is a big sacrifice, but its worth it in the end. It is expensive, but there is the FAFSA...You might get a lot of help money wise. I want to see you happy, and you are so smart. You have supported him through so much, I know he loves you and he does want to see you happy, I wish there was an easy way for you both to do what you need and to be happy at the same time. I know what it's like to be in a job you're not satisfied with, but I also know how it is to have to pay the bills! I love you and am here for you :)

I don't think even if I had the money I would have the time, we both basically have to work full time to pay the bills. Our place is expensive and I knew we'd have to sacrifice to pay for it, but I don't regret it because I love it.
I've been doing a TON of research and im convinced I can teach myself.
My ultimate goal is to become a stay at home mom that makes cakes at home. I just need to work on the mom and the cake parts haha. I think if I could make good cakes and offer competitive prices, I have the kitchen for it, I could make cakes at home. People pay good money for cakes and the demand for them will always be there.
Basically, if you want to eat some cake, my place will be the place to be because I will have lots of ugly test cakes to be eaten lol.
I just have to save some $$ for supplies and books and dvds haha.

It can be done. You can do it if you want to badly enough. I manage to attend an Ivy League university (with a huge scholarship, true, but what it doesn't cover I pay for) while supporting myself and J on my NYC cop salary (O hai there 60 hour work weeks before we even get into how much time classes and related coursework take!), and we live in Manhattan, one of the most expensive places to live in the country. (Our place is considered cheap around here. It costs $1650 a month in rent and is tiny and in a somewhat shady area.) Sure it's a sacrifice of time, money, and a great deal of sleep now, but it will be so worth it in the end.

If going back to school is what you want to do, you can absolutely make it happen. If he can't support your dreams, it's time for a serious talk.

Its not that he doesnt support my dreams as much as he really wants me to persue writing. He just doesn't understand what a crazy field it is and how hard it is to get a job that actually makes money in writing.

He thinks the cake thing is just a phase im in because I've never mentioned it to him in seriousness. I just thought people would think it was silly.

He'll realize its what I really want soon enough.

I don't think I will try to go to the school downtown here. It sounds bad, but im not really interested in taking a ton of food prep classes when baking is my true interest. I've found some very promising alterative classes in the area that involve only pastry and baking. So im going to look into that.

Luckily for brian he already went to school for what he wanted to do before we met, he just needed a kick in the ass to do it lol. I have to start from scratch.

Also... that's impressive! I don't know if I even could work 60 hours a week without going crazy.

I think the cake idea is a marvelous one. I totally understand about having to pay rent and all that jazz though.
Hmm I don't really know you're area, but maybe there are other options besides that one school.

I have a friend who makes fab cakes and she has some what taught herself. She actually started out working in the bakery of a grocery chain. Which could be a possibility for you as well because then you're actually getting paid to learn the basics.

Then she took some classes at a local community college. They were strictly cake decorating and such. She loved them. And they were much less expensive than if she went an actual culinary school.

I know for awhile she also added different cake peeps on myspace. She would get tips and inspiration and stuff. Kinda like a cake community.

Now she is a stay at home mom who makes cakes. She actually gets a ton of work. She did my wedding cake. It was hot pink with black polka dots. Super fun and different.

Just check around your area and see what there is to offer. :)

"She's a stay at home mom who makes cakes."

This is literally exactly what I want to do. I have such a big kitchen. I think I could do it.
Like I said, cake demand will never go away. People will always get married and always have birthdays... if I could do well and offer competitive pricing, I see no reason why I couldn't succeed and do well, even.
The class I looked at was at our community college, but its a bit of a curse/blessing that ours is one of the best in the nation and more like a real college. it would be great because its in walking distance but its an awful lot of classes.

Learning to cut hair doesn't take long. Learning to apply color is a breeze too. It's perfecting the skill, learning the proper preparation and sanitation in order to do so successfully.

There's good money in cakes, but it also takes time in learning everything there is to know about it .. even if the classes are bullshit on paper. I think that it would be an awesome career, but I also think that it's worth putting in the legwork. Sinclair has a ton of full-time working people in their programs, and they will work with your schedule!

Take Wilton cake classes! They are at either at JoAnn's, Michael's and AC Moore, it is like once a week! They teach you pretty much everything you need to know. Last time I checked classes were once a week for about 3 hours, and it was 25 for the lesson(which is a month or so long). There are 3 separate courses all together and that is not including the fondant courses, that is separate on it's own. I only went as far as course two, but it is a lot of fun. So you won't necessarily need a degree for cake decorating, you can always go that route. Hope that helps a bit :)
