Fic: Silver (Rated PG)

Jun 01, 2004 21:56

The first of two fics. I'm still struggling to finish the one for the Gen ficathon--which is probably going to be late due to something related to Greenwich Mean Time. I know that it's the time over in England, but I don't know if it's four, five or six hours ahead of or behind my location. So I'm just trying to finish it before midnight, Eastern ( Read more... )

Ah. So if it's 10:30 p.m. here, does that mean that it's 5:30 p.m. there or 3:30 a.m. there?

But don't forget Daylight Saving Time! Our clocks go back in the winter, making it an hour less ahead of you.

For instance, if you're in the same time zone as Houston, you are currently 6 hours behind us. So when it's 5.30am in Houston, it's 11.30am here. But in the winter, our clocks get turned back an hour. So when it's 5.30am in Houston, it's only 10.30am here.

And this is sort of OT to your story, but I'm fairly certain that Wormtail's silver hand is going to play a role in Remus' future, and then we'll know more about the effects of silver on werewolves in Rowling's world.

Oh, I'm fairly sure we will. Peter's a pivotal character, after all. I'm hoping that either Harry will use the debt Peter owes him to save Remus' life, that silver in the Potterverse isn't that bad for werewolves, or that Moony or a Grim-shaped Sirius will bite Peter's silver hand off so that he can't use it to kill Remus.

The description of the effect of silver is chillingly real, and the analogy to memory is well drawn. Remus handles silver so the pain of that replaces the pain of memory. Beautiful and poetic.

Poor fellow. I feel sorry for him. He's lost everything and has very little chance of ever reuniting with the man he loves. (For some reason, the character refused to get overly emotional, even when I wanted to. He even refused to cry.)

Lovely ficlet, very well done.

Thank you very much.

Memory burns.

It burns like silver

I love your final two lines! And your first three, as well. They're so powerful and haunting.

I feel so sorry for Remus, but I have to love the detail you put in, about werewolves, silver and souls.

Well done, very muchly well done!

I love your final two lines! And your first three, as well. They're so powerful and haunting.

For some reason, T.S. Eliot started echoing in my mind: "April is the cruellest month, mixing memory and desire..." And that got me thinking about how desire burns and memories can bless and burn...and then, because I'd been talking to a friend about Remus, about how silver can burn at a touch. So that's where those lines came from.

I feel so sorry for Remus, but I have to love the detail you put in, about werewolves, silver and souls.

Thank you.

Very chilling. And I love the amount of detail you went into and the how you used werewolf mythology to make it so Remus couldn't even follow Sirius in death. So very sad.

I know entirely too much folklore. I think that's what has been bothering me about the Veil since OotP; the realisation that, if werewolf mythology holds true in the Potterverse, Remus is trapped. He can't get revenge on his lover's attacker; he can't kill himself; he can't kill anyone during the upcoming war; and if he dies during the upcoming war, his body has to be burned the following sunrise or he'll be cursed again. There's no way out for Remus; he's a good, decent, honourable person who has every chance of winding up accursed and/or damned for eternity. And it's consummately unfair.

I hadn't seen anyone deal with the situation in fic, so...I guess I had to write it out.
