Unpopular Opinion Meme

Jul 18, 2012 15:00

Gacked from scrollgirl:

Give me a fandom and I will tell you at least one opinion that I have that might be unpopular.

Ask me anything! It doesn't have to be a fandom that I'm particularly familiar with. Sometimes I have opinions about fandoms that I only know through fannish osmosis. (And if I don't know the fandom, you get to pick again.)

conan doyle stories, star wars, bleach, the hunger games, chronicles of narnia, unpopular opinions, btvs, harry potter, twilight, transformers, game of thrones, good omens, lord of the rings, memes, sherlock, full metal alchemist, legend of korra, dollhouse, buffy

I never got into Transformers, as the original incarnation of the franchise, now known as Generation 1, began in 1984, the year that I graduated from college. I never developed an interest in either the original show, the later cartoons or the moviews later because I find two things--the robotic voice in the theme song saying, "More than meets the eye" and Starscream's voice, period--grating. I can't listen to either for any length of time; both sounds make me think of nails on the chalkboard. And I can't tell an Autobot from a Decepticon. They all look the same to me.

So...yeah. I completely fail at Transformers fandom.

1) I think that I'm the only person on the planet who thinks that Theon Greyjoy, as played by Alfie Allen, is funny-looking ( ... )

I hated Theon's guts in the books (still haven't seen the show). Even the parts where he gets shot down don't make him sympathetic to me, because they're things like "oops, my dad isn't suitably awed by how I've grown up after all, and now I am angry at the world for failing me" or "oops, this girl I thought was a hot piece of meat is my sister (so bitch won't give me what I want)." Also, killing small children. I am not in love with Jaime like the rest of fandom either for similar reasons (it's not his fault he didn't succeed at killing a small child), but at least he has some redeeming characteristics.

Yeah, my interest in shipfic in ASOIAF fandom is minimal at best. This is why I only write gen in that fandom. :)

I think that I might be the only person who likes Orihime. (I'm not really sure why she comes in for so much hatred, either. She's kind, optimistic, loyal and sweet. What's wrong with that?)

I get the impression that most of the 'hime-hatred comes from fanatical IchiRuki shippers who regard her as the rain that drags their OTP down and/or want to demonstrate their utter disdain for the IchiHime shippers.

ETA: Also, I can assure you personally that you're not the only one who likes Orihime.

1) I don't ship Aziraphale/Crowley. And I honestly think that I'm the only one who's ever read the books who doesn't ship those two. This is primarily because, for me, the point isn't whether or not they're having sex but the fact that they actually do care about each other, which is far more transgressive than sex. (And I wrote a short fanfic about this, too.)

2) I remain convinced that Susan was NOT shut out of Paradise at the end of The Last Battle, despite what Polly Plummer, Peter and Lucy had to say, because she was still alive. To me, this means that Aslan still had something for her to do here on Earth.

3) I'm also not willing to accept that she'd forgotten everything about Narnia because she was currently talking about it as if it were a game; that struck me as a very sensible cover story. I've seen plenty of characters in other stories use similar lines to cover up the existence of strange abilities or of magical worlds. Nor was Susan a child any longer; by 1949, the date of The Last Battle, she was 21. People expect very ( ... )

I still don't like Katniss having kids at the end of Mockingjay. Yes, I KNOW it's supposed to be a sign of hope and an indication that, fifteen years later, Katniss has realized that her children no longer need to fear the Reapings...but to me, that ending feels tacked on and rushed. It reminds me of all of the smug grownups who ever told me that no matter how much I said that I didn't want kids, someday I would and I'd be a wonderful mother. The ending disregards everything that Katniss ever said about not wanting kids--and ignores the fact that Katniss didn't want kids for many different reasons. The Reapings weren't the only one. But no. Katniss has to be married and have kids at the end...because she's a girl.

I wouldn't mind, but a woman's decision NOT to marry or NOT to have kids is so often ignored or derided by the media, both in fact and in fiction. Seeing Katniss ending up not only in love with Peeta but having her decision not to have kids overruled--that left a bad taste in my mouth.
