Tumblr

I'm afraid I don't get Tumblr. I know that part of the reason I don't want much to do with it is the missing E in "Tumblr." That makes my brain itch; I want to fix it and I can't. I know how trivial that sounds, but it honestly has a nails-on-the-chalkboard effect; I almost hear the screeching sound when I look at the word ( Read more... )

The missing E LOL Little issues like that are what makes humanity so much fun :) No worries, we all have them.

Wait... what?
The second thing I don't like about it is that the company calls you on the telephone when you try to join.I've created two separate accounts, both of which I've had to sign up for, and no one ever called me. In fact I don't think I so much as had to give a phone number. That's... odd in a bad way ( ... )

I think it's a combination of the older people having less time to be online, and the younger kids are not coming on LJ anymore, they're on twitter or tumblr or facebook.

Yeah, and I don't understand WHY. I mean, if you can't talk or give feedback, what's the point?

Response are hard to respond to, and after one are two back and forths, you pretty much can't at all.

I would hate that.

The 90% pictures is exactly why I like it. It's a great way to get art out there, but for text/stories/theories/essays it's horrible. I don't understand why people post fic there, or RP there, or other text based things on there. I just IMHO doesn't work as well.

Yeah, it's good for art, but then--as nagasvoice said--people just post and repost the art and the name of the artist gets lost. I don't like that. Artists deserve credit for their work.

I'm sad to see LJ and DW dying down. As for as an actual social media, it's by far one of the best platforms, and I just hope it picks back up somehow.

Me too.

Apparently, the ease of posting (and reposting) means there is less effort required to participate, and thus people are more likely to do it?

:sigh:

I generally don't have much use for twitter or FB, but apparently that's where a lot of folks have shifted to. For those folks where a 140-word limit is adequate for their updates, and the interaction is in the network of comments and retweets, this works all right for them.

I don't understand how that works, since I have a murderously hard time tracking down comments and retweets. And I think it's 140 CHARACTERS, which limits Twitter to near-muteness as far as I'm concerned.

I've seen Pinterest and didn't like the fact that everything was public. I didn't really see any interaction, either, though I do like what you said about honoring the original artist.

I hadn't heard of Gimmebar, but if there's not much social interaction, I don't see any reason to bother with it.

I've been getting the sense that Real Life has been smacking people pretty hard.

I just had the sense that everyone has moved on to the Next Big Thing.

No, I don't care about the Next Big Thing. I just...miss having more people around.

And my phone doesn't tweet. It does text, but that costs a fair bit in terms of minutes, so I don't bother.

I know I've been only sporadic on LJ primarily because RL has kicked me in the face these past few months. I enjoy being linked to things on Tumblr (I also have a kneejerk desire to add an "e," for what that's worth), but I've got no interest in moving over there for pretty much all the reasons you state--it's not a word-friendly interface, the comments function barely exists, and it's not very good for discussion, so to speak.

I'm also not on Twitter because I'm long-winded. I don't do things in 140 characters. It's not who I am. I admire people who can get points across in small chunks but I am not one of those people.

I am on Facebook because it's one of the better ways of keeping track of everyone I know in differnet countries who aren't on LJ. LJ is still my primary social networking outlet--I have an account on DW and periodically update it to match my LJ, but mostly due to laziness I haven't really made the move over there.

You've been working on a book. Books are important.

I'm very reassured to know that I'm not the only one with an impulse to add an E. Misspelled words--like certain colors--give me that nails on a chalkboard feeling.

Yes. I don't really get the point of social media that make it so difficult to socialize.

I joined Facebook when I first moved to Oxford and it was one of the best ways to get in touch with people in different colleges (especially for multi-college events, etc), and I mostly use it to keep track of people I don't normally get to interact with in other forums, either IRL or on LJ. Also, it is weird how much interaction I have with my extended family on Facebook, but they are literally scattered across the world, so it probably makes a weird sort of sense.

You know my real name so if you'd like to friend me on FB, that is totally fine! I don't post very much except for random silly stuff, but my exceedingly opinionated husband uses it as a forum for his political observations and that is generally amusing to watch.

I should be back on LJ more often now that my teaching term is over and I can actually start writing again (thank goodness). I am hoping to do proper posts on the seminar this summer, at least in part to help me keep track of everything. I'm really sad that I didn't manage to keep up with my teaching posts, but ( ... )

I hate Tumblr, too. I use it, because it seems like that's where fandom is these days, but I don't post fic there and I agree- it's impossible to have a conversation. you can do it with reblogs, but then your entire list is subjected to your conversation as it progresses, whereas on LJ, you can have a long conversation in the comments and people can follow if they're interested, or they never have to click on the entry again and the conversation doesn't intrude on them.

I like Facebook for my "real life" (especially kid related stuff), and I like Pinterest for things like cooking and craft ideas and stuff for the kids. But I'm sad to see LJ kind of dying out. I also feel like a lot of the people I know from fandom are either in completely different fandoms I really don't care about, or have left fandom or whatever, and I haven't really had the drive or desire to meet new people as much.

I feel so old :)

That strikes me as a serious flaw. But I bet that the makers would say that this wasn't a bug--it was a FEATURE.

How does that work out? I post political stuff there, but that's about it. (I gave up on the Facebook games.)

Ugh. Probably. In fact, I'd bet money!

Pretty well, actually. Most of the people I have friended on Facebook are old friends from high school or college, or people I know from MOPS or neighbors. Or family- all of my cousins are on facebook. There are maybe 3-4 people from fandom, and they're all people I like as people and I trust not to cross the streams. I keep Facebook and fandom very strictly separate- very few people know what my LJ account is. So it definitely works well. I try to avoid the politics, though. (A lot of my family is more conservative. It can get ugly.)

Some of us ain't going anywhere, 'cause LJ/DW still suits our needs best. Talking. With words. In multiple sentences. To make a point. Or not.

Yep, on the ATPo board in the olden dayz.

Happy to say many ATPoers find LJ more conducive to their online habits then other places. That said, many of us also have each other friended on FB. A lot of stuff gets x-posted over there in much briefer form.
