Duke Special

Went to Bush Hall with tippex79 last night to see Duke Special.

Have to say it was a brilliant and very unusual gig. Essentially it was The Duke plus his screwball percussionist Chip Bailey with occasional Bass guitar support. Wonderful songs, extravagant drumming, and notably Stumpfiddle playing, which is always something to see ( Read more... )

I love Bush Hall - we hadn't been there before last November and ended up going to two gigs there in one week!
One was Imogen Heap who didn't know there'd be a piano there until she turned up and so came off stage, stepped on us to get to it and then played a couple of songs on it - it was amazing. Everyone was standing up and she said "People at the back probably can't see, can the ones at the front sit down?" and instantly EVERYONE in the room sat on the floor! It was really weird, she was really amused that everyone just did it on her say so :p

The other act we saw there was Kathryn Williams. they had tables and chairs out in cabaret style but that was only enuogh for half the audience, the rest stood behind. It wasn't quite as intimate - she wasn't stepping over the audience for example - but she was heavily pregnant and was very funny and chatty.

Gah, that must have been fantastic!

The only other really cute intimate venue I like that much is Cabot Hall at Canary Wharf where we saw Heather Nova a few months ago, it was similar (but much posher!).
