Duke Special

Went to Bush Hall with tippex79 last night to see Duke Special.

Have to say it was a brilliant and very unusual gig. Essentially it was The Duke plus his screwball percussionist Chip Bailey with occasional Bass guitar support. Wonderful songs, extravagant drumming, and notably Stumpfiddle playing, which is always something to see!

Bush Hall is a small little venue, there were maybe 120 people there. There's no seating, so lots of people were sitting on the floor and loving the gig. Additionally, there was a grand piano in the middle of room that people were leaning on etc, until the final song of the night, when Duke came down and we all gathered around and had a sing-song!

Excellent support too from the Fast Emperors, who are a bit like Snow Patrol, only better. Young band that could really make it big.

The second support was a Gary Dunne, a one man with guitar, but really good songs, and an incredible performance by recording little snippets of backing tune as he was going and then looping them, adding another layer or two and then singing/playing over the top of them.

Each of the acts was preceded by a local poet, Wayne Smith who did a couple of poems each time, short and accessible (you can hear some on his site)
