Chapter 1

~~~***~~~
“Kai-kun!“ Uruha’s eyes widened considerably at the sight of this boy who he hadn’t seen for such a long time and who he hadn’t expected to see in this life again for that matter. Kai hadn’t changed at all, he realised while looking at the other, still in shock and still in the middle of the street. Sure, the other was only two years older now, but shouldn’t he have changed even a bit? Both Reita and Uruha had grown a bit over the past couple of months, leaving adolescence behind for good, and at least Uruha’s boyfriend had gained muscles and other things commonly associated with ‘manly‘ bodies.
Not that he was a body-builder by any means, but he was stronger than Uruha; a fact they were both aware of and also a fact that didn’t exactly improve Uruha’s growing uneasiness around his boyfriend.
Kai, however, was still his slightly shorter, slender self with a soft smile and equally soft eyes, soothing and loving at the same time.
“Let’s get you off of the street,“ he chuckled, taking Uruha’s hand and leading him to the other side of the street.
The blonde noticed Aoi’s presence for the first time; the brunette hadn’t spoken yet but he too was smiling, seemingly happy to see Uruha again. Not that they had had the chance to get close during their stay in the boarding school, not at all. Yet something about meeting these two guys again felt like coming home, Uruha realised, shuddering a little.
“Ummm guys, I ...“ He was at a loss for words. What words would be appropriate in such a situation anyway? None or all? So much had been going on between all of them, so much they couldn’t grasp fully anyway and would talking have changed this? At all? Uruha decided against it, decided against any questions at all; if the others were willing to talk to him they probably would explain and if they weren’t there was no way of making them anyway.
“Nice to meet you again, Uruha-kun,“ Aoi finally spoke up in his usual, slightly husky voice.
Uruha couldn’t help but smile, knowing suddenly that he had missed both of them all the time, and pull Aoi into a hug. “Nice to see you, Aoi-kun. Very nice.“
Reita was looking out of the open window, revealing a brilliant blue sky, and couldn’t help but pout.
He had never really had any arguments with Uruha at all, mostly due to the other blonde’s cooperativeness when it came to Reita’s plans and ideas of their life together.
Now all of these wonderful plans he had worked on so meticulously seemed to fall apart like a house of cards and he didn’t even know why . Nothing had been out of the routine, except for Uruha being late to class, and nothing had gone wrong in any way until the blonde had decided to bitch at him for no reason at all.
He had only done his best to help Uruha after all and his reward was a hissy fit and a day of skipping school from his boyfriend.
Reita was a very attentive student usually, writing down every single word the teacher said during class, which often led to other students copying his notes and studying with the help of those instead of their own or they skipped classes altogether, since they could simply read Reita’s notes to receive the same information the other students had.
Today he wasn’t using his pen for writing, though, but instead he kept biting on it; no delicate nibbles like Uruha would have used probably, but real biting, a habit his mother had been desperate about ever since Reita’s early childhood. She had always feared that her son might choke on a splinter of plastic one day and right now said son really didn’t care if his mother’s worst fears and nightmares became reality.
He had been presented with a situation he could not handle, simply because he didn’t have all information necessary to do something about it and change it to a more favourable one.
It was a vicious circle, he thought, biting down on his pen so hard that he indeed felt the plastic break under his teeth. He couldn’t make Uruha happy as long as he didn’t know what was wrong with him, but he couldn’t ask the blonde either because he was mad at him and asking would have probably led to more unhappiness.
He was so deep in thought that he didn’t notice the shadow moving through the huge auditorium and didn’t even notice said shadow flop down beside him.
“Hey Rei-chan.“
Silence.
Then Reita spun around, staring at the short blonde of him, horrified and trembling. He hadn’t seen this person for the better of two years and if things had gone his way it would have remained like this for all eternity. No matter how much Uruha claimed it wasn’t the boy’s fault Reita still disliked Ruki.
“What the fuck ...? What are you doing here?“
“Shhh!“ A girl, who Reita had always had a deep-seeded hate for, turned towards the pair, raising an unplucked eyebrow in disapprovement.
“Sorry,“ Reita murmured, his cheeks turning slightly pink; a thing he had always disliked about himself.
He turned back towards Ruki, frowning at the other’s appearace; he hadn’t aged a single day, he thought. The blonde was still seventeen, not nineteen like he should have been. He filed this information away for more careful examination later on when he had the time, paying full attention to the boy beside him, class long forgotten.
“I don’t mean to sound rude, but what are you doing here, Ruki?“
“ I don’t mean to be rude either, but you really shouldn’t talk in class,“ the girl remarked, not turning this time.
Reita sighed deeply, massaging his temples and the bridge of his nose in a desperate attempt to keep his growing headache at bay. “Whatever it is, can’t it wait, Ruki?“
The blonde shook his head and for the first time Reita realised how serious the other was looking; it sent shivers down Reita’s spine, knowing with an unshakable certainty that something was wrong and that it involved their past together.
“We need to talk, Reita.“
Uruha settled down in the café with his friends, not yet realising what was about to happen.
Kai looked at Aoi. Aoi looked at Kai. It was a decision they had had to make and they knew they had to put this burden on Uruha, no matter how much it would hurt all of them.
“Uruha ... we need to talk.“
