Two days after the conversation with Mr. Kouyou on the river bank, Obon Festival started eventually.
Die had joined them today; the red hair young man was invited to the house once Reita mentioned to the Kouyou couple that he had a friend who also happened to be in the town. It happened that today Die was having a short half day break from his work and when he knew Reita was staying with his ‘relatives’(it was a bit tiresome to explain his true relationship with the Kouyou couple so he only told Die they were his relatives), the red hair man was happy to have a chance to spend the day-off with his friend and visit a traditional Japanese wooden house, so he gratefully joined the Kouyou couple and Reita for lunch, after the meal Mrs. Kouyou given the young man a tour to the house and now accompanied by Reita, Die was having a look in the garden. The red head had brought a camera with him and was now taking pictures both outside and inside the house.
today was the first day of Obon Festival, families would burn incense for the spirits of their ancestors and cook vegetable as meal; but most of the public ceremony would only began till dusk, the Kouyou couple had decided that they would join the ceremony at nighttime. Reita wondered what exactly was Mr. Kouyou hoping to find during the Obon Festival; the blonde asked his friend whether he was free to join them tonight, the red head had already agreed.
While he was deep in thought he failed to notice Die had already walked out of his sight, once realizing it, Retia left his current spot to look for his friend and found the red head standing before a huge sakura tree at the far corner of the garden. It was summer so there was no bloom among the branches; instead there were only layers of green lefts among the branches. The tree indeed looked ancient; probably it would take two of three people linking hands to surround the tuck. To tell the truth, Reita didn’t notice there was a sakura tree in the garden before, the blonde wasn’t as glad or as interested as Die was when he saw the tree, because sakura trees always brought bad memory back to him.
After taking a few more shoots on the tree and its surrounding in different angles, Die finally noticed Reita’s presence; he turned back to his friend and smiled. “A nice looking tree, right?”
Reita shook his head. “You think so?”
“Yeah. I don’t know how to explain it, but when I moving around looking for things to take pictures, it strikes me that how *special* this tree appears to be. That seems to be something…special about it.”
Reita focused on the tree before them, at first he couldn’t see what Die had seen on this particular tree; but then…he thought he see it too, or sense it finally, the many long branches of the sakura tree spreading above their head, the layer of green lefts overshadowed this quiet corner of the garden almost completely; there was something chilling about that tree, as if some lingering presence were still hovering beneath the shades. It was almost like the tree had its own consciousness and it knew they were there watching, even wondering what they were looking at with nurtural yet cunning curiosity like some ancient being. It wasn’t much of a comforting thought so Reita shrugged it away quickly.

The four of them went out together at dusk after dinner and arrived to the square before the last of the sunlight disappeared completely under the horizon. People had just started to gather in the open space, they could see the drums of different sizes being settled on the stage, and a bonfire being placed at the center of the square. countless of traditional lanterns were hanged high above the mid-air by wooden columns and wires, lightening up the entire area. the ceremony would begin soon and now people were spending their time buying masks or snacks from the vendors. Reita could see people walking up the stone stairs to the temple behind the square, probably wanted to pray for protection from their ancestor spirits or to give their offering, like fruits or flowers for example, to the gods.
They ended up following those people to make a visit to the temple as well, more lanterns lightening up the way for them until their reached the shrine and prayed there. It took a while before Mrs. Kouyou finished her praying and the three men waiting for her patiently outside the shrine, Reita understood that it was natural for her to want to pray for her son, praying for his happiness no matter where he might now be.

So when they finally returned to the square the special dance for the Obon Festival had already began, they stood near the stage and watched masked people, many of them dressed in summer kimonos dancing with some simply steps around the bonfire. The dance was part of the traditional ritual, people were supposed to put their masks on before and during they danced during the Obon Festival, because according to traditional belief, the spirits of the dead, who usually appeared to be masked, would return to dance in the nights of Obon Festival among the living people. And when everyone put their mask on then no one would know who might be the returning spirits who went back from the underworld.
After a while, Mrs. Kouyou suggested the two young men to go and join the dance, claiming there was no need to stay with the ‘old people’-what she referred herself and her husband as-- and not having any fun of their own all night. She even brought them two masks: one with fox’s face and the other one with a monkey’s face to them, so giggling to each other despite themselves, Reita and Die put the masks on and joined the crowd.
People were circling the bonfire as the danced slowly, at first Die was still with him but later Reita had lost sight of the red head, with so many people whose faces hidden behind different kinds of colorful, funny looking masks it was difficult to tell who they were. The blonde looked up to the deep blue black sky above head and was greeted by countless gleaming tiny stars, it was a beautiful summer night. Reita thought to himself and decided to dance a little longer before he left the crowd to look for the Kouyou couple and Die again…
With that thought in his mind, slowly Reita pulled his own monkey mask off his face, he started to move himself to the outer ring of the dancing people slowly, trying not to disturb anyone, it would take him a few more steps to leave the crowd entirely but his eyes happened to catch sight of a strangely familiar light hair figure among the crowd, like many other the figure was dressed in a summer kimono and his face was hidden by a rabbit mask. Still Reita heart nearly stopped at the sight of this figure, it looked so similar to the one appeared in the picture which Mr. Kouyou had showed him!

Uruha…

the name was the only thing flashing through his chaotic mind before he realized himself rushing back to the crowd again and pushing pass the people who happened to block his way despite their complain and protests. The figure was moving slowly away while dancing along with the crowd but Reita refused to give up, finally the distance between them began to close and after shouldering pass the last bystander, the blonde found himself right behind his target. Without thinking, Reita put a firm hand on the light hair one’s shoulder preventing him from moving away.
Being caught off guard, the masked one slowly turned his head back to face him, those deep brown eyes blinking back at him questioningly behind the rabbit mask. It was when their eyes met did certainty sank in. Reita was sure about it, it couldn’t be anyone else-

The next thing he knew was his hand reaching out to unmask the other one, revealing the face beneath it, then Reita found himself facing a rather stunned Uruha looking back at him with bewilderment...

Tbc…
I’m evil to stop right here, but it’s time to go to sleep…*goes to bed*
