Summary: a sequel to my fic Yougenkyou-moon ( links). Seven years has passed since Uruha disappeared, a lot of things had changed, but things wasn’t going well with Reita…

six years later…

at nightfall Ruki received an unexpected phone call from -of all people- his ex-boyfriend. The phone rang and he picked it up. “Hello?”

The voice reached to his ear through the line. “Ruki kun…it’s me.”
Ruki felt his heart skipped a beat upon hearing the voice, somehow Reita’s voice had never failed to affect him that way. “Oh Reita, it had been a while.”
“…Sorry for not calling you more often.”
“It’s okay.” The blonde hair one chuckled dryly before answered. “Is there anything you want to tell me Reita kun?”
“Yes…actually…I’m going to be away for a while…”
Reita’s voice sounded somehow different than before, but maybe it appeared so only because he hadn’t heard the other man’s voice for quite a while.
“Really? You go for a trip or something for the holiday?”
“Something like this…” it was a pause before Reita continued. “Actually…Uncle and Aunt Kouyou had invited me to join them for the holiday…”
“Mmm…” Ruki wasn’t entirely surprised to hear this. After losing their son, Reita had became something like a replacement for the Kouyou couple, and the young man had always kept contact with them. it sounded normal that they would invite Reita to visit them during holiday.
“When will you go?”
“Next week.”
“Have a nice holiday then, Reita kun.” He replied as cheerfully as he could manage.
Ruki almost thought that their conversation was about to end but then Reita decided to bring up some other topic. “Ne Ruki…do you remember Die kun?”
“I do.” Die was the friend whom they had made during collage time, a easy going guy with bright red hair, he could be some kind of a joker when he liked.
“He ended up working for a land development company recently, you know that right? And next week he happens to have to go for a business trip to the town too, so I’ll go with him on the same train.”
“Wait!” Ruki was confused by the other man’s words. “What town you have been talking about?”
“…Uncle Kouyou had invited to go back to their hometown for a visit. They had just moved back there earlier this year.”
Ruki’s breath caught in his throat. “…they had decided to go back there for staying?”
“Yes, Uncle had just retired so he brought Aunt back to their family house, the house had been left empty all these years after all…”
“I see…” the blonde sighed slightly, there was no point to overreact, the family house of the Kouyou family should be gone back to normal already, nowadays the house would be nothing more than an old traditional house surrounding by a large garden, with a tale of ghost or two.
Even though this house was still the place where everything had started…
“Ja…I’ll call you again before I go.”
“See you later then.”
“Goodbye, Ruki kun.”
“Goodbye.”
With that Ruki hanged up the phone with a deep sigh, originally he had agreed to have a night out with some of his friends later that night but now he had lost the mood, he would have to phone those friends later to inform them that he couldn’t join them tonight.

He needed time to stay in his home alone to clear some of his thoughts. Reita’s phone call had brought up many memories of which the blonde had tried hard to avoid recalling. Seven years had passed since Uruha - the adoptive son of the Kouyou couple had vanished without a trace, and things had changed so much in these seven years, for both him and Reita, for Uruha’s parents and the others. There was no way to fill the void Uruha had left behind, but all of them had tried to move on in their own different ways. For that, Ruki chose to give up his gift of seeing ghost in order to cope with it.
Seven years…even though it might sound cruel, but under the law in Japanese society, a person who had been missing for seven years would be considered as dead, so Uruha was now legally dead, but Ruki didn’t know whether it was a good thing for the Kouyou couple or Reita or not.

Reita had an even harder time to cope with the pain of losing his best friend, but Ruki had remained by his side and trying his best to help. So it took them a long while to work things out between each other, and for almost four years they had remained as a couple- longer than Ruki had dared hoping this relationship would last.
It was him to make the first move to end their relationship as lovers at the end, and Ruki tried not to regret his decision. The two of them remained as friends after the break up but they couldn’t share the intimacy they had once had before.
Reita and he had grown to know each other well through the years and they were comfortable with each other’s company. Reita was a nice person and treated him right; Ruki had nothing to complain and everything seemed to work out well between them until Ruki noticed that there was always a void in Reita’s heart that even him wasn’t able to fill. And he slowly came to realize that this unfulfilled emotion deep into Reita’s heart was connected to his lost best friend Uruha.
As Uruha’s best friend for years, Reita had always cared a great deal for the light hair boy, to Uruha at least it was a mere friendship though it might mean a little more than this to Reita, whether the other one had admitted to himself or not. But even since the boy’s disappearance, something in Reita’s feeling toward Uruha had changed.
Ruki never figured out what exactly had caused the change in Reita’s heart, but the blonde knew that because of it he would never be able to have all of Reita’s love despite how much Reita claimed to love and care about him, despite the fact that Reita probably wasn’t even aware of the feeling that lurked at the back of his head.

The break-up took place more than a years ago, but he couldn’t deny that he still cared about Reita; okay he did more than care for the other man, he actually still missed him, but he was too tired of fighting over Reita with Uruha, who wasn’t even there in the first place, though the light hair boy’s presence had always been lingering there in their relationship.
It was a lost battle and Ruki knew it too well, you couldn’t win an opponent who wasn’t even presence; so he gave up before he could hurt himself even more.

Tbc…
