See me in awe of your accomplishments! It sounds as if you were being seriously deprived.

Wish I thought I could fix my notebook's mounting variety of woes myself, but no; it'll be off to repairs once I've caught up on overdue fics.

Well, I have a fair amount of experience with swapping components on desktops, and HP has downloadable service manuals for their products. Still, yeah, it was a little scary. Laptops aren't as sturdy as desktops. But it was half the cost of sending it out, and I did back everything up first.

Where do you pick up just the mobo of a specific laptop model? o.O

I should dissect my laptop a bit... if only to get all the dust out. >.>  And maybe see if I can fix this hinge mechanism... but I am definitely buying a new laptop in summer; definitely by fall.  This one is approaching 4 years, the supposed lifetime of a laptop anyway, so I feel ok picking up a netbook to replace it. ^^;;

(So what kind of laptop do you have?  Did you take any pictures of the dissection? :D  I actually have this other laptop I destroyed via water damage; I wonder if it's even possible to just replace a few bits and have it working again....)

Well, this is an HP laptop, and one of the great things about HP is that, like Dell, they put this identification sticker somewhere on every computer, and that sticker has a number that is more specific than the model. So my case identifies my model as a Compaq (HP bought them a while back) Presario V6000, but when I type in the code from my sticker, that returns with the information that I have a Presario V6400Z CTO. From their support site, I downloaded the service manual, which had instructions on how to replace all the various components, and the part numbers for those components ( ... )

Huh, the water-damaged one is an hp (pavilion zv5000), actually!  It is huge and clunky and more for media/entertainment than portability (it came with a docking station, which I wish I could sell off, but oh well).  Although it also only came with 256k of RAM. >.>;;;  I wonder if I could find a mobo for it?  I got it 5 years ago....

I currently use an acer travelmate c200 tablet, which is not engineered like most other tablets on the market (and probably for good reason).  Er, I guess it's not really a hinge, but the part that slides has become disconnected.  It's kind of annoying and I worry it will break more, but it doesn't really hinder usage, although sometimes the screen flickers and I have to wonder if that's why. ~.~
