Well, this is an HP laptop, and one of the great things about HP is that, like Dell, they put this identification sticker somewhere on every computer, and that sticker has a number that is more specific than the model. So my case identifies my model as a Compaq (HP bought them a while back) Presario V6000, but when I type in the code from my sticker, that returns with the information that I have a Presario V6400Z CTO. From their support site, I downloaded the service manual, which had instructions on how to replace all the various components, and the part numbers for those components.

The service manuals are intended for people who do this sort of thing regularly, and they're a bit terse. It listed two possible system boards for my laptop, without enough information for me to tell which one I had, so I had to take the laptop apart before even ordering the board, in order to find the identification sticker. (Irritatingly, this turned out to have been unnecessary -- the sticker was under the memory card and would have been EASY to get to had the manual said where to look for it.)

Then I plugged the part number into google, and saw who had it for what price, and then I plugged the name of each inexpensive vendor plus "reviews" into google and got an idea for who was reliable. I chose PCConnection, whose bad ratings were mostly old and from sites with only a small sampling, and I had the board two business days later. (UPS ground from a neighboring state.)

You might be able to repair the laptop with water damage. It would cost some to find out, of course, so it's a gamble. The board cost me almost $200 (repairs would have been around $400), for a laptop that I probably could have replaced for $650, but I was sure about what was broken.

Do you have a Vaio? They're nice, but the hinges always go. :-)

Huh, the water-damaged one is an hp (pavilion zv5000), actually!  It is huge and clunky and more for media/entertainment than portability (it came with a docking station, which I wish I could sell off, but oh well).  Although it also only came with 256k of RAM. >.>;;;  I wonder if I could find a mobo for it?  I got it 5 years ago....

I currently use an acer travelmate c200 tablet, which is not engineered like most other tablets on the market (and probably for good reason).  Er, I guess it's not really a hinge, but the part that slides has become disconnected.  It's kind of annoying and I worry it will break more, but it doesn't really hinder usage, although sometimes the screen flickers and I have to wonder if that's why. ~.~
