Dishwasher detergent advice

As I've said, here and most everywhere, I'm trying to be a bit more frugal and a bit more "green", so here is the next question:

Can I replace dishwasher detergent with baking soda? I know that there are arguments to not use dishwashers at all, but let's all just go with that ain't gonna happen right now

Looks like you can cut your regular detergent with a mix of baking soda and borax to get dishes just as clean and save cash.
