Dishwasher detergent advice

As I've said, here and most everywhere, I'm trying to be a bit more frugal and a bit more "green", so here is the next question:

Can I replace dishwasher detergent with baking soda? I know that there are arguments to not use dishwashers at all, but let's all just go with that ain't gonna happen right now.

So, who can tell me? Can I use baking soda? Or some other household product - like vinegar? Thoughts, please.
