Ah, December already! It’s the season for Bōnenkai and the general disorder that comes with them, and there’s the vacuous commercialism of Christmas, of course. Time to waste money on gifts we don’t need and elaborate Christmas cakes, or an excuse to treat your lover to a romantic evening that’s as empty and commercialised as everything else ( Read more... )

I wonder what Santa would say about all that negativity about what he does.

I wouldn't say I was being negative. Just pragmatic. That, and I'm a little old to be believing in Santa.

[Yes, he's seen him on the network, no, he doesn't believe he's actually Father Christmas :|]

Ever think the 'growing a little too old' thing might be just what he wanted? Better to get around that way.

Not really. I prefer to deal with facts rather than fairy tales, myself.

[Not entirely true, given his slight obsession with Valkyries and Valhalla, but he isn't going to mention that]

I'm not sure what Christmas is, but around this time of year my people would celebrate our creation by honoring our god, Faliel, who thought the bonds we made with others were precious. So around this time we would spend three days feasting and competing with the people we loved most.

So I'll probably eat, train and think of them this year.

That's interesting, to know that other worlds have celebrations that seem to mirror those we had on Earth, minus the 'competing'. What do you mean by that, exactly?

Are there people you're going to miss, then?

For two days, the men and women would hunt animals and fight each other in tournaments to determine who the best hunter and Wielder was. The two who got picked would then do a dance on the third day to thank Faliel for giving us life.

Yes, I already miss them. What about you?

That sounds a little brutal, though infintely more practical than the customs of my own world. Would you mind telling me some more about this god of yours and what makes your people believe in them.

That makes this time of year a little dismal then, don't you think? And yes, there are people I miss, though there are plenty of new people here for me to get to know ♥

[Not 'miss' exactly, but he won't admit to that, and guess who generally spends this time of year completely alone anyway? Besides, he considers every human in existence as his friend, lover and family, so he's happy enough just to know humans still exist]

I'm glad not everyone is so blinded to the commercialism surrounding such festivities.

I'll take that as a compliment. And yes, it's funny how blinded people can be to the emptiness behind their actions during holidays such as this.

It can certainly prove beneficial, for those of us who can see beneath the fantasy.

Would you like to elaborate on that?

[Of course he knows this. He just likes to hear other people's views]

I'm celebrating by default, in a way, because I'm attending the winter gala the day before.

I see. Though attending the gala is a little different from celebrating Christmas itself, perhaps.

[He'll be there himself, in an official capacity]

Yes, but considering the planet we're on, the winter gala will be the closest we get to actually feeling that time of year.

That's assuming you're from a country or world where winter is a cold season, isn't it?

A lot of people are probably going to jump on the celebration even if they have no idea what's going on.

Since, you know. Presents.

Of course. Humans are selfish by nature and such behaviour is only to be expected.

I can't speak for the other races present here, but I expect many of them function along similar lines.

Or they like giving presents.

A possibility, but do you think that's for purely selfless reasons, or because they gain something from it?
