[Well lookie here, it's Crow. If he's noticed that his guide is on, he doesn't show it. He's too busy being a good worker this time as it seems he actually has shown up for his job this month as a Library Storyteller, reading to the kids. Such a nice guy...]

So Peter Pan and his friends were able to beat Captain Hook and his band of pirates--which ( Read more... )

You're pronouncing "Pupa" wrong.

[Because apart from that it's all rather familiar]

Huh? What's a "Pupa"?

['Cause he didn't see that word anywhere in the book, he thinks. :|a]

Pupa's the name of the character. Pupa Pan. Not whatever you said.

No it's not. It's "Peter". It says so right on the front of the book.

[He even holds up the book in front of the guide so you can see for yourself.]

[Nods in agreement. See, someone around here gets it!!]

Of course! They're the coolest and have the best stories to tell and the most exciting adventures to be had. Plus there's all that awesome shiny treasure they find sometimes on their travels. What could be better than that?

Nothing! And they get to eat as much meat as they want...!

Hey, are you a pirate?

Well yeah, who wouldn't want to be a pirate?

...Though, I haven't had the chance to really "sail the seven seas" or anything like that yet, what with my world being gone and all, but that would be really cool if I could go do that part of it someday.

You're not very good at reading stories, are you?

Hey, it's not my fault that these kids can't appreciate stories about pirates. They're way more exciting to read about than "talking animals" or whatever it was one of them wanted before...

Hey, talking animals are pretty cool! It shows how smart they are to evolve in that way!

If it were me, I'd probably want a story about a cool magician who saved the world with his intelligence. Yeah, that sounds pretty great. Why not read them something like that? Or make it up on your own?

Eh? A magician? Magic's cool and all, but unless they're magic pirates or robots or something, then I don't see how they could be cooler than that. [Biased towards pirates much?]

As for making up my own, I tried something like that, but they kept interrupting me to ask questions before I could even finish telling the story, so I've just been reading these books instead. It's admittedly easier and less annoying...

As long as the main protagonist has fun and dangerous adventures, the kids will like the books.

[He used to read a lot for the other orphans, after all.]

Well yeah, the more fun and dangerous it is, the better!

...Not like that talking animals book that's all about "sharing and caring" or something like that. [Do you see now why he is confused as to why some of those kids would rather hear a story like that?]

Some kids like those, though. I personally find them kind of boring- even if I do agree that people who have everything should share.

[Even if they are kind of unaware that they are sharing. And they don't even want to share. And it's kind of stealing in the end.

Nuances.]

I guess that's true, but it's still really boring to read about most of the time. They aren't as good as the stories about pirates getting to loot or discover treasure and other cool things like that...

[Raises an eyebrow.]

Deviating from the script, I see.

I doubt the children care much for your commentary, and much prefer to hear the story itself.

I'll read the story however I want to read it. Besides, it's not my fault that I didn't know this story would have the pirates losing in it, otherwise I would of read a different one...

Peter Pan is a lovely story, despite the fate of the pirates. It's a good choice for children.

[He is more amused than anything, despite chiding him.]

You should be creating the magic for children. Match your tone to the story and characters. Give it a bit of flair, why don’t you.

Gee, you make that sound so easy... [It's obvious that Crow has little experience when it comes to dealing with little kids by his pessimistic tone, but at least he hasn't actually given up yet. Besides, he won't get paid if he doesn't do his job, so...]
