Well, this is interesting. I can't claim that it's a situation I ever would have anticipated, but it's interesting, nonetheless. Ah, it brings up a lot of fascinating questions, don't you think? How is one supposed to feel on discovering their home world - everything they knew and all the people that ever meant anything to them - has been ( Read more... )

This isn't saying my world was bad, but since coming here things are a lot better for me. It took me less time to find a cure to my sickness here, than back home.

I see. Well that's reason enough to prefer it here, I suppose. What kind of sickness was it, if you don't mind me asking? And out of curiosity, how did you respond to the knowledge that your home world had been destroyed when you first arrived, before you knew it would be easier to find a cure, here?

Well... I didn't feel good about it, but thinking back... I didn't have anybody I would really miss. I just thought I'd list my chance for a cure because of the doctor I was travelling to find.

I... I was possessed by a ghost that tried to kill people who got close to me. Well... That was the worst ghost anyway. I still have others....

I see. I'm not sure whether to believe that's unfortunate, or a blessing given our current circumstances. I suppose it must have made things less painful for you than it would have done for some.

That...sounds unpleasant, to say the least. Though at least you are rid of it now. And the fact that you were trying to rid yourself of it rather than giving in to the condition is admirable; it shows you have maintained your humanity. Though what kind of ghosts are you possessed by, now?

That's what you're worried about? What people think? Do you understand your home doesn't exist anymore?

I wouldn't say worried. More curious, than anything. And yes, I understand, though I only have people's word for it. I'd prefer having evidence rather then blindly believing what I've been told.

You can jump out of the closest hatch and see for yourself.

How mean~ Though all that would prove is that I am currently in space, it does not provide proof that my home has been destroyed.

You think this is a shitty situation? And should I take that to mean your home world was unpleasant, or the circumstances that came after?

Also, why are you typing like that, if you don't mind me asking?

I'll admit that the paperwork sounds tedious, and I won't pretend that I'm not a little disappointed to discover my world may have been destroyed, but I think this could prove to be an interesting social experiment of sorts, nonetheless.

Waiting to be culled by an abomination? That sounds a little dramatic.

And in that case, fair enough~

That seems to be the case for a few people I've spoken with. I've yet to encounter anyone I knew from my own world, personally. Though is it simply because there are people here that you already knew that you found this place 'not too bad', or are there other reasons?

I suppose I was really interested in the specifics of our arrival here - how the wormholes function and so on - along with whether anyone had any concrete evidence to suggest their worlds had been destroyed, but so far no-one has been able to answer those questions in a satisfactory way. I won't hold my breath.

Still, any information you can give me on our current situation that you feel is important or relevant to life on this ship would be appreciated.

I see.

Ah, I've already encountered your partner, as it happens. I suppose that would make you Soul Eater?

I will keep an eye out for him, thank you for the advice. Though it seems the people on your world have very unusual naming habits.

It appears natural to respond with fear, confusion, or anger. Why guilt?

Well, there is always the possibility that knowing you managed to survive when so many others were destroyed - perhaps people who were important to you, or even strangers who may have held the potential for greater worth - could elicit feelings of guilt. It could feel like a burden to some, don't you think?

Guilt implies a level of responsibility. Unless one had a direct or even indirect hand in their world's destruction, there is no reason to experience this.

We do not understand the emotional phenomenon of survivor's guilt.

Some people would certainly see it like that, but that is not the case for everyone.

Its quite simple, really, and fairly common amongst humans who have survived traumatic events. Knowing that you are the only one - or one of a few - to survive when everything else you have ever known has been destroyed can be a somewhat disorienting feeling, I expect. It would leave some people to wonder why them, when there were so many others who could have been saved.

Who are you referring to when you say 'we'?
