To all of those interested in learning general first aid:

The Preventers organization has asked me to teach the basics of first aid this month to anyone who may be interested. I am sure most of the people on the Thor know of what first aid entails of, but as a precaution, I will list the aim of it here ( Read more... )

When you have some time, I would like to ask a favour of you.

[ Sounds so serious! ]

...Is this something you would prefer to ask in person? Or is over the Guide fine?

Here is fine.

Since you are on the subject of healing, I would appreciate it if you could cast that Protect spell on me prior to my usual morning regimen.

[ Oh. Conclusion: Kid is a sadist. In a fairly stern voice: ]

You very well know it has the opposite effect on you than what is intended.

I'm well aware; that's why I'm asking.

Then I'm afraid I don't understand. Why are you asking me to cast a spell that causes pain and discomfort on you?

Because in order to learn to overcome something, one needs to be exposed to it.

[ his voice loses some of the formality ]

Your spell was the third thing to overwhelm me like that. The first two -- BREW and the Book of Eibon -- are not here and in fact they may no longer even exist at all. I'd be both neglectful and foolish to not try and make headway on the third.

Building immunity to that kind of magick isn't something... it simply isn't attempted. It could very easily kill you, Kid.

[ Oh, but considering Kid is a shinigami.... ]

...Or something close to it in your case, I imagine. Were I to make an error in judgement when deciding how strong of a spell to use, you might end up gravely wounded.

[ Kid is silent for a moment, and when he speaks again, most of the formality is back. ]

Very well. I apologize, I should not have imposed on you for this.

I will find an alternative means.

I shall not allow you to harm yourself! If you insist on finding someone else or are thinking about finding some other way to inflict a similar effect on yourself, then I would rather do the task myself.

[ It will be his burden to bear! ]

...I shall do it for you....

It's fine, Larsa.

It is not fine, Kid.

I cannot... knowingly allow you to find a way to harm yourself to overcome any weakness to White Magick you may have. I know I am not the only one here who knows that branch of magick, but you must believe me when I say it is very dangerous to use on you even with proper precautions.

If I am there and something goes awry, then at least I can make an effort to remedy the situation. I have lost far too many people who were dear to me because I was not there when I should have been.

Most importantly, we are friends, are we not? Friends do difficult things for each other. Things like caring for an uneven number of rappigs even though it probably made your skin crawl. Things like using magick opposite its intended purpose.

[ And to top it off, since Kid asked Larsa a favor and therefore had a need, Larsa would be soiling the name of House Solidor like every other male in his family by refusing to aid him. ]

[ Opposite... the term gives Kid a new reason to pause and hold off his answer for a moment. Larsa believed that using healing magic in this way was wrong, a perversion of what how things were supposed to be. It was a little like Larsa's own version of symmetry, in a way.

And Kid was asking him to ignore it, when -- had the situation been reversed -- he is not sure he could do the same thing. He cannot help that a magic normally intended to help does not do the same thing to him. He supposes he is the opposite one, being unnatural in a whole ship of the kind of people who needed living and healing things.

He feels like a terrible friend, and more unsure of his own nature than ever. ]

...I apologize, Kid.

[ Unnatural on the Thor perhaps, but certainly not in Ivalice. The problem is, Kid may not be human, but he's not a monster either. The only thing Larsa can equate Kid to is an Occurian, but the differences between a god of death and a god of... whatever the Occuria are gods of (history?! life in general?!) are immense. For starters, Larsa -knows- Kid. He isn't some god waaaay up where no one can reach. And, you know, Kid isn't trying to control the history of man. Or do other unkind things. Larsa does understand Kid isn't asking him to cast the spell for fun and that the point is to help Kid grow stronger. But casting a beneficial spell to cause harm to someone-someone who is without a doubt the closest friend Larsa has made-is a difficult burden for him to carry ( ... )

[ Kid supposes that is a very small stipulation to abide. ]

Very well.

Then... I have your word? The pace will be slow, to be safe.

[ Because that's all he needs. From anyone. Luckily, Kid isn't someone likely to take advantage of his naivety. ]
