Hello, everyone! I am brand new at growing things, but I'd like to start. :) My boyfriend and I live in a mobile home in Georgia (not as redneck as it sounds, I swear!), and I'd like to get a planter and a little something to put in it to put on the front porch steps ( Read more... )

Lots of good suggestions have already been posted. I just want to say, as a gardener of 35 years standing, that we all kill plants occasionally. It's just part of what happens out there in the big open garden, so don't give up if you do happen to kill something [g].

That said, I hope your first plantings are a big success.

Oh, and portulaca (moss rose) is great for hot dry places.

Marigolds are my go-to for my garden that gets afternoon Texas sun and 100+ temps for weeks on end. Keep 'em watered and they bloom till the first frost.
