Avocado tree propagation by cutting?

My boyfriend's father has a young-ish avocado tree in his backyard; I believe this may be the first year it's born fruit. I LOVE having an avocado tree in the backyard (since my boyfriend and I are currently living with his parents), and I'm going to be sad to lose that convenience when my boyfriend and I buy a house of our own. To answer your first question: from what I gather, it's somewhat difficult, but absolutely possible. I have only skimmed through a few articles, and so far read nothing about how long you'll have to wait for it to bear fruit.

If the cutting is from a mature branch, probably about 3 years or so, depending upon whether the tree is actually large enough and healthy enough to bear.

Faster than growing from seed, and a more reliable quality.

Honestly! Buy a bare-root tree that has already been grafted from a known baring fruit tree. You'll get fruit faster and better if you do that. Unless you just want to play around and learn a few things and don't mind the wait for fruit and that's if it ever does bare fruit.
