Given that it's a rental, I'd go with the ivy. As you point out, grapes take too long. Also, they don't tend to make a solid covering like ivy can.

Since that's an alley back there, can you prune those plants that are growing over the top of the fence so you can have a little more light?

I was going to do the ones coming through the fence this Sat. As for overtop, still waiting on getting our ladder back. It was borrowed out, plus I'm tiny..:(

Semi OT: How long does it even take for grapes to get established? I thought they grew like crazy, but it looks like I have a grape vine on the corner of my house that only grows like 3 ft each year (well, past 2 years) and I'm wondering when it's going to take off and do something.

Meanwhile my parents took some grape cuttings off their house and planted them at the riverbank at their cabin, and they're already like 3-4ft long in 6 months.

That's the link I was going to use. 3 years..but I'm guessing the vines grow and grow and grow.

I would not be adverse to maybe letting them grow around the shed after it's been covered in chicken wire. Seems easier than the whole fence.
