Question, and you were right

So, this is our back fence. Beyond it is a VERY over grown alley. The picture was taken JUST now with the 530pm sunlight.
My boyfriend was wanting some vines to grow over and across it.
He was thinking grapes, meanwhile, I would see us having to rent this place for a LONG while to enjoy grapes.
I was suggesting some kind of ivy or even just leaving it as it is.
I can't see putting some plant on the back fence as blocking out sunlight to the garden,as the alley trees and shrubs do that anyway (and growing things is still capable).
Anyway, suggestions?

Also, my tuffty plant bloomed today. Yep. Dianthus. It has one VERY light pink flower and more buds waiting to pop. So, it was not what I was thinking it was (don't think it bloomed last year).

(also am waiting for my mantis eggsack to hatch - thanks @manatai)
