Mystery Houseplant ID

I have no clue what these are. They do flower on rare occasions and have a tendency to sprawl. I'd like to cut them back to manageable proportions and get rid of the sickly looking parts, but I don't want to kill them.

Night Blooming Cereus.

Personally, I'd cut back all the dead bits and root the rest. It does get ungainly!

that's one cool looking plant

You can keep them as houseplants. But they do get pretty big eventually, even if you cut them back. The flowers are pretty cool, though.

Mine are houseplants--they'd never survive winters outside in my zone (7).

I think you should cut it way back when you repot it--as in maybe ten inches tall. The cut-off bits should root quite easily so you shouldn't worry about losing your plant. Most cactus need a bit of fertilizer in the spring and summer and they need a winter dormancy season before they can flower again.
I think you should do some reading about this plant. There seems to be a lot of internet sites about it so perhaps you should start with wikipedia's entry.
Hope this helps.
