Auburn has started removing the poisoned soil surrounding the two oak trees at Toomer's Corner on the university's campus. Horticulture professor Gary Keever said that the process of putting in fresh soil should be finished Wednesday.

thx.. this makes the story doubly tragic for so many reasons

why couldnt he at least kill a Tree of Heaven for cryin' out loud...???!!!

Live oaks. "Quercus virginiana" is the name provided on the site where they sold saplings grown from those trees' acorns.

They are Live Oaks. I live in Tuscaloosa, and am an alumna of UA. For what it's worth, Tide fans are disgusted and depressed by the actions of this individual. I know throwing money at this will only do so much, but there is a FB donation site:

From what I understand, Harvey Almorn Updyke Jr. never attended the University of Alabama.

Thanks for the update. I hope the trees didn't absorb too much herbicide, but I guess we'll see.
