I wonder why they picked those particular vegetables? Anything that inspires people to grow food is excellent, I think. In fact I was just talking with OH about the way vegetable growing seems to be back in fashion and wondering how many of the new plotholders on our allotment site will make it through to the end of their first growing season. Some will, we hope.

Perhaps they're seen as good for a beginner? I remember spinach was one of the first veg we grew in our first garden, and while I don't care for it much as food, it grew easily and was a good addition to our diet at a time when money was scarce.

It's a hard year to be starting - I've barely touched my allotment this year , the weather's been so rubbish. I haven't started any of the things that can be sown in February becuse it's been too hold for them to get a decent start. Next week, for sure :-)
I applied. Love growing spinach! Beetroot might not be an option as I am without a garden right now but this will hopefully change in the very near future!(crosses fingers)
Beetroot (one word, rather than two) is the British English term for what they call beets in the US (and possibly elsewhere, I know not! :-)). I think we call it that because you can eat the tops of them as well, although that's not as popular these days as it used to be.
There's also sugar beet and I think there's fodder beet. Perpetual spinach is leaf beet, not to be confused with real spinach. Chard is also a beet. All these fab veg are varieties of Beta vulgaris.

To me, beetroot taste of mud, but Rob likes them, so I grow them for him :-)
Spinach is one of the "in" veggies for salad at the moment,
I didn't realise that - trends tend to pass me by, on the whole :-)

Ordered some for both ourselves and my parents! I LOVE spinach and we spend a lot of money on it from the super market!
