Free seeds

Feb 28, 2010 10:39

The folk at Britain on Show are giving away free beetroot and spinach seeds (UK residents only) here.

I don't work for them and am not affiliated with them in any way - I just thought the UK comm members might like the chance of some free seeds.

seeds, vegetable: spinach, vegetable: beet

Beetroot (one word, rather than two) is the British English term for what they call beets in the US (and possibly elsewhere, I know not! :-)). I think we call it that because you can eat the tops of them as well, although that's not as popular these days as it used to be.

There's also sugar beet and I think there's fodder beet. Perpetual spinach is leaf beet, not to be confused with real spinach. Chard is also a beet. All these fab veg are varieties of Beta vulgaris.

Chard is also a beet.

Ooh, I didn't know that - ta! Although the appearance of the leaves should have been a big clue really.

Oops! I should check my facts before shooting my mouth (keyboard) off - just looked at my perpetual spinach seed packet and apparently it's Spinacia oleracea. I give up, I'm no botanist! I just like growing veg and eating them :-)
