I've got lots of half grown kale, it can withstand a lot of frost, but it grows slowly as the days get shorter and colder. I store my carrots and parsnips in the ground coverd with lots of leaves to keep the ground from freezing solid.

I hear ya about the kale .... I have enough to choke a horse right now, but luckily I love the stuff.

I've still got beets (just a few) & carrots in the ground too. Makes more sense to store them out there than in the fridge or the freezer.

yes, we are having an extension here in SW Michigan. I wish I'd known about it before I pulled up all my tomatoes and peppers. But I'm hoping my summer planted cabbages will go-to-town, and the pak choi/carrots I seeded a month or so ago. I picked the last of the secondary cabbages today, but the new cabbages look so nice, still getting broccoli, yummy.

I have two leaf blowers; they shred leaves on vacuum mode. Birthday presents.....:)

In Zone 5a, 5b, or 6a, depending on what you're using to find the zone I'm in. I'm willing to split the difference and say 5b, but to help you out a bit, I'm in the Cleveland metropolitan area, only about six blocks from the Lake Erie shoreline. Frosts here tend to be delayed; killing frosts are almost always delayed; to make up for that, the Spring warming is also delayed, with the ground staying cold into May (which probably explains why so many local folks traditionally "put in" their gardens over Memorial Day Weekend ( ... )

*is also jealous of a shredder*. i have an old leaf blower than can be converted to a shredder, but it doesnt work with wet leaves. i just clogs up over and over and over until i give up. and this is the soggiest fall since i moved into my house. i have a HUGE maple tree, over 10 feet around. it drops a metric shitton of leaves, and it wont stop raining here. taking care of the leaves is gonna suck this year.
