I hope this is allowed. My house, yard and even porch is having a major squirrell or chipmunk problem. It is mainly bothering me now because I just planted a new flower and less than an hour I go outside and the dirt around it has been dug up ( Read more... )

I have heard that putting ground pepper (hot stuff like jalapenos) in the dirt where you don't want them to dig can work- they don't like it on their little paws:)

Mwahahaha.

I also have squirrel issues, but I figured pouring broken glass into the dirt would be a bad idea in too many ways. (As a bonus, I've heard that hot pepper can keep ants away, too.)

broken glass is certainly going to be more trouble in the long run.

Oh, even in the short run, as I like to walk around barefoot. (And I don't really want to actually harm the squirrels, much as I rant about them and feel vindictive when they chew up my plants.)

I suppose you could always just plant stuff rodents don't want to eat but that severely limits what you can plant ( ... )

the haveahart traps work if you drive out to the middle of nowhere for release. But you make a point about going 4 blocks away.

No, never do this. This is illegal in most states. If that squirrel is sick, you'll spread diseases to other animal populations elsewhere.

The law in most places is, you trap an animal, you either kill it or release it on your property.

I've trapped and killed a half dozen squirrels that developed a taste for tomatoes, but once the pecans came in, the battle was lost. Still, it can be satisfying. I've spent many mornings on the back porch with a cup of coffee and an air rifle. Death to tree rats!
