i've heard burying a piece of chicken wire or other small meshed fence over the bulbs can discourage squirrels from digging up the bulbs. never tried it though as my dog seems to keep the squirrels out of our yard for the most part.

urine from a predator works well. As yesididit points out a dog works well also. I've heard of people having success with a little hot pepper on the plants.

We have occasional plagues of rabbits in our neighbourhood here. When it gets to the point where nothing will grow in the garden before being mowed to the ground by ravenous lapines, I will go and douse the area liberally with blood meal. It stinks, seems to keep the rabbits away, and helps fertilize the plants at the same time.

Squirrel launcher: 100% effective. Too bad I am at work otherwise I could post the youtube video of this epicness.

Then I'd get loads of hate comments I'm sure. XD

The only thing I can think of is what others have mentioned. laying down or encircling the area with chicken and/or hardwire cloth too small for them to dig/chew through. You could also put a low current into that fencing.
