I think what I meant it that it would be pretty hard for us to mow the lawn with all the huge rocks and our lack of equipment hah :) We can't wait to transform it because it's the most awesome backyard ever...the rocks go really up high to a gazebo from which we can watch the ocean. Now I gotta clean it up!!! it's hard work. Most of the leaves are raked now and most of the weeds pulled out. What would you use to kill the weeds that might be still growing?

The yard is out of a fairytale! It's one of the best thing about the house. The house used to be an artist studio and apparently they had flowers everywhere but then it was turned into a rental and people didn't care about the yard :( We are having a lot of fun right now with it even if it's a lot of work. So far i've been hand-pulling and shoveling stuff out, raking the leaves(and seeing a lot of nasty bugs). Thanks for your comment :)

I think some miniature daffodils or other minor bulb would be lovely in places where you can tuck them into enough soil.

I would probably start with raking up the leaves, then weed specific areas. Your last photo was a bit to dark to accurately identify plants (but it looks like there is a great deal of english ivy). Have you thought of looking into rock garden types of plants? Various types of thyme would not only look lovely tucked into crevices but is quite tasty in the kitchen, mint is another easy-to-grow tasty plant (though it is rather invasive). Soapwort is quite beautiful and grows well in rock garden type settings. I would also look at shallow rooting plants for the small beds that will bloom twice a year perennially such as gerber daisy & sweet violets (which both seem to like dappled sun in my garden).
It looks like a most lovely space for a vibrant garden :), I will look forward to seeing your progress as you make a secret garden magically appear from a forgotten pathway!
