sudden changes in light?

You may need to resort to shade-cloth for some of the perennials until they go dormant and you can safely transplant them. The light-lovers will love it and you'll be weeding OUT tomato plants. LOL! The other thing you could consider it planting a fast-growing sun-lover to provide the shade. Brugmansias grow like wildfire and will get really leafy and full if allowed to--plus they give glorious blossoms mid-summer to early fall. If you got a few and put them in containers, they could provide moveable shade for your perennials. Good luck!

I had that happen to me last year -- I had transplanted ferns into a nice shady area -- then we had a major storm and the tree that shaded the ferns.. well.. came down. :/

No more ferns, unfortunately.

I guess it really depends on the plants you have in your garden. Are there any that you're specifically worried about?
