Hi. I live in New York City and have turned my building's backyard into a pretty productive organic garden. I have lived here for eight years and have built raised beds and planted perennials based on the yard's shade patterns.
This worked really nicely until this morning, when some people with chain saws and a wood chipper showed up and cut down the humongous tree in the yard next door, a major source of shade. My garden will get a LOT more light now, and I'm not sure what the consequences will be, besides better tomatoes (hooray!).
Has anyone had a sudden change in the light and shade patterns in your garden after it was planted for the year? What happened next? And specifically, did you find a way to keep shade plants shaded?
