Pecan Flowers?

Apr 27, 2008 09:23

Anyone who has a pecan tree knows of the horrors that come with springtime--mountains of cast off flowers. They get into everything. Last weekend I swept up a pile roughly 2' high and 4' across.

So can they be used as mulch? How will they effect spoil pH? Can they be composted?

mulch, trees, compost

I have 4 Pecan trees and hate them ! They get mowed down here or tossed in the trash...

They can be composted. Since they're little, they break down pretty fast. There are an awful lot of trees that are pretty or productive but not worth all the cleanup required. I've got sweetgum and those stupid little gumballs are the bane of my existence.

Wow, that's awesome. I have a project now. I have to excavate a compost heap and work in a mountain of pecan flowers and a #10 wash tub full of rancid goat manure. It'll be tough, but next year I'll have mountains of potatoes!

I just need to invest in masks and a jar of vick's.. ;P
