Grass clippings

I read that grass clippings were good to put on top of my pumpkins. In fact the rule (so I've heard) is that "if it's dead, put it on your pumpkin patch ( Read more... )

well as long as the grass clippings are dried and dead and brown, what you have, my friend, is mulch! and mulch is good for everything!

Pumpkins are heavy feeders. They like living in compost piles.

You can mulch the rest of your garden with dried grass and other similar material, but you can pile the compost on for the pumpkins.

I'm not sure if this is true of other cucurbits.

LOL - ne'r a truer word was spoke...
I abandoned my halloween pumpkin in the front yard till well... about a month ago. Anyway it was this flat gross mess so I scooped it up and plopped it in the yard waste bin. Lo and behold about three weeks later I pulled out the bin to add to it and all the pumpkin seeds were going bonkers - sprouts everywhere!

the issue with grass clippings isn't burning, its the tendency to matt down and eliminate water penetration. just besure to mix it in with the top 3" of soil so it makes a loamy material, rather than just throwing them ontop, which will dry down to a carpet like structure that prevents water percolation.
