Dad, Joost, And Me

Jun 03, 2008 20:07

At a meeting at my father's care home this afternoon, convened to lay the residents' and their families' fears to rest, I was pleased to hear that the home will do everything in its power to rehome the people in their care, and for that reason are willing not only to work with the families and mediate with other care homes in the area, whether they ( Read more... )

I'm glad your dad's care home is helping rehome him. (I'd pictured you taking him in). And GO Joost! Good that he's feeling well enough to get out with his family. That's fantastic.

Me, take Dad in?! Out of the question! My excuse is that I live in a small flat on the top floor of an apartment building without any lifts, but really, I couldn't live with him 24/7...Come to think of it, I don't think I could live with anyone 24/7, or why am I still alone?

I hope Dad'll like the rooms, staff and facilities at Amethisthorst (the home nearest my address) when he gets shown round there next week. If he does, we can push on ahead and have him moved and settled into his new environment within a month or two. Thankfully, he's quite looking forward to the whole enterprise, especially since he's been told about the new carpets...It's funny how the promise of soft furnishings can make an old man cease to fret! There were so many other people at the meeting yesterday who were scared and confused and shouting it was a disgrace and they didn't want to move...sad, really.

Joost just continues to defy medical opinion, and in his own quietly stubborn way, keeps fighting his disease. He's amazing.

My first thought when I read that you father's home was closing down, all I could think about was all those scared old people. Because change is scary, and when you are old and set in your ways, even more so. But I'm glad your father is seeming positive about it, and hope that the move will go smoothly.

And yay for Joost.

You know that contract will show up the minute you hand the new copy over. :P

I have no doubt that it will. Anyhoo, the postie's been and there's no sign of the copy yet, which means everything's going to be on hold for a few more days at least while I'm off to see Messrs Berkeley and Katz in London, and hp can go jump.

I am so happy with the news about Joost. And things do sound quite hopeful about your Dad too.

It does sound good, doesn't it? As I said to Melissa, it helps that Dad is actually looking forward to the move. He wouldn't have initiated it, as he's quite content with where he is, but the promise of soft furnishings seems to have kindled a strange sort of excitement in him, and I think that can only be helpful. Most of the other residents seem to be frightened and digging their heels in (if all the shouting at the meeting yesterday is anything to go by), which means that Dad, by his positive and cooperative attitude, has already placed himself ahead of the queue.

I have no words to express my admiration for Joost. He seems to have unlimited resources of patience and stubbornness, and I'm so immensely grateful to have him still here.

Good luck finding your dad the perfect place, and that is great news on the Joost front! I'm so pleased for him and his family (and you!)!

Also, good luck on stalling HR. That's not fun, and possibly the hardest part of looking for and finding a new job.

The more I think about it, and the more I hear, the more I am persuaded that the offer is derisory. 8 Months' salary for 14 years faithful service? If I go to court, chances are I'll get 14 months plus outplacement at the very least. I've just sent off an e-mail to HR to let them know that the papers they were going to send haven't yet arrived, and that consequently, I will be unable to give them a reply when I come back to work next week.

Now I'm going to go to London and forget about the whole thing for a few days.

Well, enjoy the time away in London. I'm glad it's looking to work out with your dad - I'll keep my fingers crossed that he likes the place near you.

Yay for Joost! That's fabulous! And let HP dangle for a bit while you go away.

Take care of yourself, sweetie - big hugs!
