It takes a long time... baldynomad August 30 2005, 14:23:16 UTC
Getting the truth behind a product and it's effects on humans physical and mental well-being can be quite a task. Though it's not apples to apples, take saccharin ( ... )

This is a flawed study. See APA results that wholly contradict and disprove it. Nice try, New York Times. Jack Thompson

Don't listen to Jack "small-minded" Thompson this study is not flawed.
Also to add to the ever increasing evidence that video games are safe and NOT harmful the Swedish National Institute Of Public Health carried out some experiments earlier this year and the studies give no support for a link between video game playing and aggressive feelings, thoughts or behaviours.

The only conclusion you can draw from the APA's research in violent video games is that when you force or bribe undergraduate college students to interact with projected images of violence in highly controlled, unnatural and contrived laboratory settings, they are more likely to perceive ambiguous actions as aggressive, or have aggressive thoughts and impulses in the short time-period after the exposure to violent interactions.

This is a far cry from being able to claim that violent video games cause a long-term increase in aggression and violence in the real world.

Good study, but... jabrwock August 30 2005, 15:05:51 UTC
It would be nice if someone could study the effects of non-fantasy violent games. While this study will help to counter groups like the APA, if it had focused on children, and on more "reality oriented" (fighting humans instead of monsters) violent video games, I think the results would have had a stronger impact.

Still, kudos to the NYT for bringing studies like this into the forefront!

The below took me 5 mins to search for in google. These are just a small fragment of the many studies and research that conclude that playing video games are not bad for you. There are plenty more out there maybe we should try to find as many as possible and post them all here ( ... )

...duh. Anahad O'Connor is a brain-damaged lesbian, and the mafia makes him take medicine that make him say NONSENSE like that.

Actually, Jack Thompson already replied. It's nice to hear he's made it through Katrina, he really should regester here if he's going to post so often. That way he won't have to sign his name after every post.

Nice article. Another unintended but positive consequence of video games is much better eye-hand coordination.
